چکیده

As an active remote sensing technique airborne laser scanning (ALS) is able to capture the topography with high precision even for densely forested areas. Due to the high pulse repetition frequency of up to 400 kHz a high sampling rate on the ground can be achieved, which allows the description of the terrain surface in decimeter scale. In this contribution two approaches to characterize terrain roughness are described. In the first approach the standard deviation of detrended terrain points is calculated. To achieve a high spatial resolution of the derived roughness layer a high terrain point density is essential, which requires especially in dense forested areas a very high sampling rate. In addition to the 3D position of backscattering objects, full-waveform ALS systems provide the width of each detectable echo, which provides information on the range distribution of scatterers within the laser footprint that contribute to one echo. It is therefore, an indicator for surface roughness and the slope of the target. In comparison to the roughness layer derived from the first approach using high point densities, the derived echo width image shows similar spatial patterns of terrain roughness even for moderate point densities. The results show that both the echo widths and the vertical distribution of terrain echoes are useful to derive reliable geometric terrain roughness layers of large areas. * Corresponding author.

LiteMapper-5600 is a new high-accuracy airborne LIDAR system for corridor and wide-area mapping of terrain and vegetation with a unique feature: it digitizes the echo waveform of each measurement. This paper outlines the system and its components, presents first samples of data that were collected recently with a prototype in flight tests, and analyzes system performance. It highlights applicat...

Processing Full-waveform Lidar Data to Extract Forest Parameters and Digital Terrain Model: Validation in an Alpine Coniferous Forest

Small footprint discrete return lidar data have already proved useful for providing information on forest areas. During the last decade, a new generation of airborne laser scanners, called full-waveform (FW) lidar systems, has emerged. They digitize and record the entire backscattered signal of each emitted pulse. Fullwaveform data hold large potentialities. In this study, we investigated the p...

Analysis of Full-waveform Lidar Data for Classification of Urban Areas

In contrast to conventional airborne multi-echo laser scanner systems, full-waveform (FW) lidar systems are able to record the entire emitted and backscattered signal of each laser pulse. Instead of clouds of individual 3D points, FW devices provide connected 1D profiles of the 3D scene, which contain more detailed and additional information about the structure of the illuminated surfaces. This...

Terrain surfaces and 3D landcover classification from small footprint full-waveform lidar data: Application to badlands

This article presents the use of new remote sensing data acquired from airborne full-waveform lidar systems. They are active sensors which record altimeter profiles. This paper introduces a set of methodologies for processing these data. These techniques are then applied to a particular landscape, the badlands, but the methodologies are designed to be applied to any other landscape. Indeed, the...
