چکیده

30 Cortical spreading depolarizations (SDs) may lead to long-lasting alterations in 31 cerebral blood flow (CBF), which contribute to neuronal dysfunction and hypoxic tissue 32 injury. There is growing evidence to suggest that age-related structural and functional 33 alterations of the neurovascular unit significantly increase both the incidence of SDs and 34 aggravate their functional consequences. Recent studies suggest that metabolic signaling plays 35 a major role in modulating cerebral blood flow responses evoked by SDs and provide critical 36 evidence that aging considerably weakens metabovascular coupling with SD. As a 37 consequence, the aged brain becomes increasingly more vulnerable to the deleterious effects 38 of SDs. 39 40

Cortical spreading depolarization causes a breakdown of electrochemical gradients following acute brain injury, and also elicits dynamic changes in regional cerebral blood flow that range from physiological neurovascular coupling (hyperaemia) to pathological inverse coupling (hypoperfusion). In this study, we determined whether pathological inverse neurovascular coupling occurred as a mechanism...

Vasoconstrictive neurovascular coupling during focal ischemic depolarizations.

Ischemic depolarizing events, such as repetitive spontaneous periinfarct spreading depolarizations (PIDs), expand the infarct size after experimental middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion. This worsening may result from increased metabolic demand, exacerbating the mismatch between cerebral blood flow (CBF) and metabolism. Here, we present data showing that anoxic depolarization (AD) and PIDs c...

Susceptibility of Primary Sensory Cortex to Spreading Depolarizations.

UNLABELLED Spreading depolarizations (SDs) are recognized as actors in neurological disorders as diverse as migraine and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Migraine aura involves sensory percepts, suggesting that sensory cortices might be intrinsically susceptible to SDs. We used optical imaging, MRI, and field potential and potassium electrode recordings in mice and electrocorticographic recordings...

Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, Spreading Depolarizations and Impaired Neurovascular Coupling

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has devastating consequences on brain function including profound effects on communication between neurons and the vasculature leading to cerebral ischemia. Physiologically, neurovascular coupling represents a focal increase in cerebral blood flow to meet increased metabolic demand of neurons within active regions of the brain. Neurovascular coupling is ...
