چکیده

An experiment was conducted to study the effects of feeding growing pigs a diet low in selenium (Se) and vitamin E (E) with and without supplementation of various levels of Se and/or E on tissue Se and serum tocopherol concentrations. Nine of 10 pigs fed the unsupplemented cull pea diet had lesions attributed to a Se-E deficiency and eight of these pigs died during the 135-day experiment. No deaths, clinical signs or lesions attributed to Se-E deficiency were observed among pigs fed any of the supplemented diets. In pigs fed the unsupplemented basal ration, hepatic Se concentrations on a dry matter basis decreased from .50 to .16, renal cortical from 3.27 to 1.86, and blood from .46 to .05 ppm during 135 days. Supplementation of the basal ration with .10 ppm Se as sodium selenite resulted in an eightfold increase in hepatic, nearly a fivefold increase in renal cortical and a 25-fold increase in blood Se concentrations compared to pigs fed the unsupplemented basal ration. Supplementation of the basal ration with 100 ppm E resulted in increased renal cortical (P<.01) and blood (I~.05) Se concentrations. Hepatic, renal cortical, and blood selenium concentrations of .25, 2.5 and .1 ppm, (dry basis) respectively, were determined to be the critical levels below which clinical illness, death or lesions of Se-E deficiency could be expected. Selenium concentration in liver, renal cortex and blood each

Effect of Selenium on Performance, Serum Selenium Concentration and Glutathione Peroxidase a C T I V I T Y in Pigs 1

Pigs from sows fed a diet deficient in Sc and low in vitamin E were fed a Torula yeast diet supplemented with 100 IU dl-a-tocopheryl acetate/kg of diet. Dietary treatments were levels of supplemental Se of 0, .025, .050, .075 or .100 ppm. Some death loss occurred in pigs receiving no supplemental Se at approximately 5 wk of age. Autopsy revealed liver and heart lesions typical of vitamin E-Se d...

Cellular immune responses in pigs fed a vitamin E- and selenium-deficient diet.

The effects of dietary restriction of vitamin E (Vit E) and selenium (Se) on lymphocyte proliferation, natural killer (NK) cell activity, antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC), and on burst respiratory response of stimulated granulocytes as measured by chemiluminescence (CL) were studied in pigs. Six male weanling pigs were maintained for 25 d on a torula yeast-based diet contain...

Lipid peroxidation , prostacyclin and thromboxane A , in pigs depleted of vitamin E and selenium and supplemented with linseed oil

In a 2 x 2 balanced factorial experiment the biochemical effects on pigs of two dietary factors were investigated. The first factor was a-tocopherol and Se supplementation and the second factor was supplementation with a-tocopherol-stripped linseed oil. In pigs fed on diets depleted of a-tocopherol and Se, increases in concentrations of markers of Lipid peroxidation (4hydroxynonenal and hexanal...

Sparing effects of selenium and ascorbic acid on vitamin C and E in guinea pig tissues

BACKGROUND Selenium (Se), vitamin C and vitamin E function as antioxidants within the body. In this study, we investigated the effects of reduced dietary Se and L-ascorbic acid (AA) on vitamin C and alpha-tocopherol (AT) status in guinea pig tissues. METHODS Male Hartley guinea pigs were orally dosed with a marginal amount of AA and fed a diet deficient (Se-D/MC), marginal (Se-M/MC) or normal...
