Classic definitions, only based on the marginal statistics, are found not to be adequate for a proper characterization of the effect of channel impairments at the application level. A more flexible definition, which incorporates time parameters and appears suitable for the characterization of the performance of packet communications systems, is proposed. An analytical framework for the computation of various performance metrics is also presented. A Markov description is assumed for the channel, which allows closed-form solutions and can effectively model many situations of interest. Outage events are defined as being triggered by b consecutive channel errors, and being ended by g consecutive successes. A numerical example of application is given, and extensions of the analysis to more general definitions are discussed.

Outage Probability Bound and Diversity Gain for Ultra-Wideband Multiple-Access Relay Channels with Correlated Noises
In this paper, Ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple access relay channel with correlated noises at the relay and receiver is investigated. We obtain outer and inner bounds for the IEEE 802.15.3a UWB multiple access relay channel, and also, a diversity gain bound. Finally, we evaluate some results numerically and show that noise correlation coefficients play important role in determining relay position.

In this paper, α-OFDM, a generalization of the OFDM modulation, is proposed. This new modulation enhances the outage capacity performance of bursty communications. The α-OFDM scheme is easily implementable as it only requires an additional time symbol rotation after the IDFT stage and a subsequent phase rotation of the cyclic prefix. The physical effect of the induced rotation is to slide the D...
متن کاملOn the Impact of Finite Receiver Resolution in Fading Channels
In this paper, we will consider the impact of finite resolution in a receiver analog-digital converter on the performance of square, linearly modulated systems over fading channels. We show that in fading channels, the probability of error in a quantized system cannot be reduced to zero due to the introduction of quantization noise, even for arbitrarily large SNR. The error floor occurs due to ...
متن کاملFe b 20 06 Outage Capacity of the Fading Relay Channel in the Low SNR Regime
In slow fading scenarios, cooperation between nodes can increase the amount of diversity for communication. We study the performance limit in such scenarios by analyzing the outage capacity of slow fading relay channels. Our focus is on the low SNR and low outage probability regime, where the adverse impact of fading is greatest but so are the potential gains from cooperation. We showed that wh...
