Social mobility over three generations in Britain∗

چکیده
We examine social mobility patterns over three generations of family members, using data collected in three British birth cohort studies. We show that for both men and women, and for all three birth cohorts, absolute mobility rates (i.e. total, upward and downward mobility rates, and inflow and outflow mobility patterns) in the partial parents–children mobility tables vary substantially by grandparents’ social class position. As regards relative mobility pattern, we show, again for all cases that we consider, that there is a statistically significant net association between grandparents’ and grandchildren’s class positions, after parents’ social class has been taken into account. Unlike the more complex association between the class positions of grandparents and parents, or between parents and children, the net grandparents–grandchildren association can be summarised by a single uniform association parameter. Net of parents’ class position, the odds of grandchildren entering professional–managerial class rather than unskilled manual class is between two and three times better if their grandparents were in professional–managerial rather than unskilled manual class position. ∗We thank David Firth and Louis-André Vallet for helpful advice and suggestion. An early version of this paper was presented at the 2011 spring meeting of the ISA RC28 in Essex.

Social Mobility within and across Generations in Britain since 1851
This paper exploits a rich data source to provide new measures of social mobility in England and Wales from 1851 to 1901. Existing measures of intergenerational mobility derived from marriage registries fail to control for life-cycle differences between father and son. Correcting for this reveals significantly more mobility across generations than previous estimates: half of all sons occupy a d...

This study examines the intergenerational social mobility of different ethnic groups in Britain between 1971 and 1991. The small body of previous research on intergenerational mobility and ethnicity in Britain has not distinguished between pre-migration and post-migration social class, and thus has been unable to relate findings directly to studies of intergenerational social mobility or to acc...

S ocial mobility – or 'intergenerational mobility' as economists prefer to call it – measures the degree to which people's social status changes between generations. It is seen by many as a measure of the equality of life opportunities, reflecting the extent to which parents influence the success of their children in later life or, on the flipside, the extent to which individuals can make it by...

Intergenerational mobility has been a topic of persistent interest in sociology and, increasingly, in economics. Nearly all of these studies focus on fathers and sons. The possibility that intergenerational mobility is more than a simple twogenerational AR(1) process has been difficult to assess because of the lack of the necessary multi-generational data. We remedy this shortcoming with new da...

This can be measured in a number of different ways, most commonly by income and earnings, by social class or by education across ...
