s | 31 yearly family income were included as covariates in model 1 and the child’s IQ was added as a covariate in model 2. Results: Children who were breastfed had higher listening (p = 0.048), speaking (p < 0.001), reading (p = 0.002), writing (p = 0.002), spelling (p = 0.001), mathematical calculation (p = 0.002), and learning quotient (p < 0.001) scores in the LDES in model 1. When adding the child’s IQ as a covariate, the speaking (p = 0.013), spelling (p = 0.041), and learning quotient (p = 0.042) still remained significant Conclusion: The results suggest that breastfeeding has a protective effect on learning disabilities in school-aged children.

Does Chronic Administration of Sodium Valproate to Juvenile Rats Induce Movement Disorder and Cognitive Dysfunction during Adulthood?
Background: Children with seizure disorder are often treated with sodium valproate (SV) on long-term basis. SV acts mainly through gamma amino butyric acid pathways, reducing the excitatory neurotransmission and modifying the monoamine concentration. Altered monoamine concentration by SV is expected to cause movement disorder and cognitive dysfunction, considered reversible after the withdrawal...
متن کاملPostnatal developmental alterations in the locus coeruleus neuronal fast excitatory postsynaptic currents mediated by ionotropic glutamate receptors of rat
Introduction: In the present work, spontaneous postsynaptic currents were assessed to investigate the postnatal development of excitatory postsynaptic currents in locus coeruleus neurons. Methods: In this study, AMPA and NMDA receptor-mediated spontaneous synaptic currents in the neurons of locus coeruleus were assessed using whole cell voltage-clamp recording during the first three weeks. ...
متن کاملMorphine Consumption During Lactation Impairs Short-Term Neuronal Plasticity in Rat Offspring CA1 Neurons
Background: Facing environmental factors during early postnatal life, directly or indirectly via mother-infant relationships, profoundly affects the structure and function of the mammals’ Central Nervous System (CNS). Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of morphine consumption during the lactation period on short-term synaptic plasticity of the hippocampal Cornu Ammonis 1 (C...
متن کاملLate onset deficits in synaptic plasticity in the valproic acid rat model of autism
Valproic acid (VPA) is a frequently used drug in the treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorders and migraines; however it is also a potent teratogen. Prenatal exposure increases the risk of childhood malformations and can result in cognitive deficits. In rodents in utero exposure to VPA also causes neurodevelopmental abnormalities and is an important model of autism. In early postnatal life VPA e...
متن کاملDevelopment of thalamocortical connections between the mediodorsal thalamus and the prefrontal cortex and its implication in cognition
The mediodorsal thalamus (MD) represents a fundamental subcortical relay to the prefrontal cortex (PFC), and is thought to be highly implicated in modulation of cognitive performance. Additionally, it undergoes highly conserved developmental stages, which, when dysregulated, can have detrimental consequences. Embryonically, the MD experiences a tremendous surge in neurogenesis and differentiati...
