Magnetic susceptibility measurements at high pressure using designer diamond anvils

چکیده
High pressure magnetic susceptibility experiments can yield valuable insights into the changes in magnetic behavior and electron correlation properties which can accompany extreme compressions of matter. However, magnetic susceptibility experiments with ultrahigh pressure diamond anvil cells are extremely challenging due to the very small size of the high-pressure sample ~'75 mm diameter! and the difficulty of obtaining good coupling between the sample and the sensing coil. As a result, measurement sensitivity and poor signal-to-background ratios tend to be serious concerns which limit the applicability of these experiments. We present here a new approach to high-pressure ac magnetic susceptibility experiments that involve specially fabricated diamond anvils with diamond encapsulated sensing microcoils which are located just 10–20 mm from the high-pressure sample. We also present some test results taken with a gadolinium sample in order to demonstrate the viability of this high-pressure ac susceptibility technique. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1544084#

Fabrication of Diamond Based Sensors for Use in Extreme Environments
Electrical and magnetic sensors can be lithographically fabricated on top of diamond substrates and encapsulated in a protective layer of chemical vapor deposited single crystalline diamond. This process when carried out on single crystal diamond anvils employed in high pressure research is termed as designer diamond anvil fabrication. These designer diamond anvils allow researchers to study el...
متن کاملGlitch-free X-ray absorption spectrum under high pressure obtained using nano-polycrystalline diamond anvils
Nano-polycrystalline diamond (NPD) [Irifune et al. (2003), Nature (London), 421, 599] has been used to obtain a glitch-free X-ray absorption spectrum under high pressure. In the case of conventional single-crystal diamond (SCD) anvils, glitches owing to Bragg diffraction from the anvils are superimposed on X-ray absorption spectra. The glitch has long been a serious problem for high-pressure re...
متن کاملIn situ temperature measurements through i-anvils in diamond anvil cells.
This study is devoted to in situ temperature measurement in diamond anvil cells (DACs) with intelligent anvils (i-anvils). I-anvils consist of diamonds implanted with B and/or C ions, situated below the diamond's surface at a depth of 1-3 microm; forming sensors which are placed below the culet at the location of the DAC's sample chamber. I-anvils can be employed as temperature or pressure sens...
متن کاملImplementation of micro-ball nanodiamond anvils for high-pressure studies above 6 Mbar
Since invention of the diamond anvil cell technique in the late 1950s for studying materials at extreme conditions, the maximum static pressure generated so far at room temperature was reported to be about 400 GPa. Here we show that use of micro-semi-balls made of nanodiamond as second-stage anvils in conventional diamond anvil cells drastically extends the achievable pressure range in static c...

We have developed a miniature diamond anvil cell for magnetization measurements in a widely used magnetic property measurement system commercial magnetometer built around a superconducting quantum interference device. The design of the pressure cell is based on the turnbuckle principle in which force can be created and maintained by rotating the body of the device while restricting the countert...
