چکیده

The theory of cognitive dissonance and research derived from it have yielded a rich array of insights into the mind. One of the early experiments on the theory, the classic experiment by Festinger and Carlsmith (1959), has been subjected to criticisms by scientists. Rijsman has offered novel, insightful criticisms of this classic experiment. In this article, I address these criticisms by reviewing research that has suggested improved ways of testing dissonance processes, and I present new data relevant to the concerns espoused by Rijsman. I conclude that while the classic experiment by Festinger and Carlsmith (1959) may have flaws, these flaws have been addressed in recent dissonance theory research.

Increasing cognitive dissonance by a fait accompli.

A RECENT theory by Festinger (1957) attempts to state the conditions under which discrepancies between cognitions produce "cognitive dissonance," a state of tension that motivates the individual to reduce or eliminate the discrepancies. One of the conditions that may be necessary for the creation of cognitive dissonance is that there be some element of volition. The theory states, for example, ...

Being Together in a Situation of Induced Hypocrisy

Induced hypocrisy is considered as a new dissonance paradigm, in which two factors (normative commitment and mindfulness of past transgressions), are combined. The inconsistency between ‘what I am preaching’ and ‘what I have done’ is reduced via behavioral change in line with the prior preach. In this study, we compared two different operationalizations of commitment factor. In a paradigmatic c...
