Intensity Distribution and Luminosity Function of the Swift Gamma-Ray Bursts

چکیده
Using the sample of long Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by Swift-BAT before June 2007, we measure the cumulative distribution of the peak photon fluxes (logN–logP ) of the Swift bursts. Compared with the BATSE sample, we find that the two distributions are consistent after correcting the band pass difference, suggesting that the two instruments are sampling the same population of bursts. We also compare the logN–logP distributions for sub-samples of the Swift bursts, and find evidence for a deficit (99.75% confident) of dark bursts without optical counterparts at high peak flux levels, suggesting different redshift or γ-ray luminosity distributions for these bursts. The consistency between the logN–logP distributions for the optically detected bursts with and without redshift measurements indicates that the current sample of the Swift bursts with redshift measurements, although selected heterogeneously, represents a fair sample of the non-dark bursts. We calculate the luminosity functions of this sample in two redshift bins (z < 1 and z ≥ 1), and find a broken power-law is needed to fit the low redshift bin, where dN/dL ∝ L for high luminosities (Lpeak > 5× 10 erg s) and dN/dL ∝ L at for low luminosities, confirming the results of several studies for a population of low luminosity GRBs. Gamma-Ray Burst Luminosity Functions Based On a Newly Discovered Correlation Between Peak Spectral Energy and V/Vmax
We have discovered a correlation between the observed peak spectral energy Epk,obs and the Euclidean value of < V/Vmax > of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We present the evidence for the correlation in the GUSBAD catalog and use it to derive the luminosity function of GRBs without using any redshifts. The procedure involves dividing GUSBAD GRBs into five spectral classes based on their Epk,obs. The o...
متن کاملSpectral Lags and the Lag-Luminosity Relation: An Investigation with Swift BAT Gamma-ray Bursts
Spectral lag, the time difference between the arrival of high-energy and low energy photons, is a common feature in Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). Norris et al. 2000 reported a correlation between the spectral lag and the isotropic peak luminosity of GRBs based on a limited sample. More recently, a number of authors have provided further support for this correlation using arbitrary energy bands of va...
متن کاملOptical afterglows of gamma–ray bursts: a bimodal distribution?
The luminosities of the optical afterglows of Gamma Ray Bursts, 12 hours (rest frame time) after the trigger, show a surprising clustering, with a minority of events being at a significant smaller luminosity. If real, this dichotomy would be a crucial clue to understand the nature of optically dark afterglows, i.e. bursts that are detected in the X–ray band, but not in the optical. We investiga...
متن کاملEvidence for Luminosity Evolution of Long Gamma-ray Bursts in Swift Data
We compute the luminosity function (LF) and the formation rate of long gamma ray bursts (GRBs) by fitting the observed differential peak flux distribution obtained by the BATSE satellite in two different scenarios: i) the GRB luminosity evolves with redshift and ii) GRBs form preferentially in low–metallicity environments. In both cases, model predictions are consistent with the Swift number co...

We compute the luminosity function (LF) and the formation rate of long gamma ray bursts (GRBs) by fitting the observed differential peak flux distribution obtained by the BATSE satellite in three different scenarios: i) GRBs follow the cosmic star formation and their LF is constant in time; ii) GRBs follow the cosmic star formation but the LF varies with redshift; iii) GRBs form preferentially ...
