Effect of the 3K background radiation on ultrahigh energy cosmic rays

چکیده
In this work we re-examine the opacity of the cosmic background radiation to the propagation of extremely high energy cosmic rays. We use the continuous energy loss approximation to provide spectral modification factors for several hypothesized cosmic ray sources. Earlier problems with this approximation are resolved including the effects of resonances other than the ∆. PACS numbers: 96.40,13.85.T,98.70.S,98.70.V Accepted for publication in Physical Review D.

متن کاملThe Mysterious Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Ray Clustering
We examine the correlation between compact radio quasars (redshifts in the range z = 0.3−2.2) and the arrival direction of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays forming clusters. Our Monte Carlo simulation reveals a statistically significant correlation on the AGASA sample: the chance probability of this effect being less than 1%. The implications of this result on the origin of ultrahigh energy cosmic ...
متن کاملUltrahigh energy cosmic rays from dark matter annihilation
Explaining the origin of cosmic rays at energies above the Greisen–Zatsepin–Kuzmin bound EGZK ≃ 4×10 eV is an interesting and puzzling scientific challenge for several reasons: AGASA observes a flux of order of one cosmic ray event per 100 km per year at energies above 10 eV [1], thus confirming the flux seen by previous smaller ground based arrays on the northern hemisphere, see e.g. [2]. On t...
متن کاملLorentz Invariance Violation and the Observed Spectrum of Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays
There has been much interest in possible violations of Lorentz invariance, particularly motivated by quantum gravity theories. It has been suggested that a small amount of Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) could turn off photomeson interactions of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) with photons of the cosmic background radiation and thereby eliminate the resulting sharp steepening in the sp...
