Survival of Rickettsia prowazeki in Different Diluents.

چکیده
At the present time very little information is available about the survival of typhus rickettsiae in fluid media. Data on this point are of value, however, in the solution of a number of problems which arise. The data presented in this report were not collected with the idea of making a detailed investigation of various media but simply to assess the value of media in common use for work in experimental typhus. Most of the data available in the literature are of very limited value in a comparative way. Topping (1940) has reported that skim milk, used as the suspending medium, prolonged the survival of rickettsiae of several species when preserved in the dried state. He also has recommended its use in work on the toxin (confidential report). Other authors have reported that rickettsiae will survive for varied periods of time in different media. On the Relation of the Organisms in the Tunica Vaginalis of Animals Inoculated with Mexican Typhus to Rickettsia Prowazeki and to the Causative Agent of That Disease
Healthy lice became infected with Rickettsia prowazeki after feeding on monkeys inoculated with a strain of Mexican typhus. The same result was obtained in 100 per cent of lice by rectal inoculation of an emulsion of tunica vaginalis of guinea pigs reacting to the same strain. In the tunica vaginalis of guinea pigs and rats inoculated intraperitoneally with an emulsion of lice containing Ricket...
متن کاملMurine and epidemic typhus rickettsiae: how close is their relationship?
Typhus fever has occurred globally as epidemic and endemic disorders. In 1910, Brill reported a typhus-like illness which Zinsser and others determined to be recurrent epidemic typhus fever. Maxcy, in 1926, proposed rodents and fleas as reservoir and vector, respectively, of endemic typhus, which Dyer confirmed in 1930. Animals experimentally infected with epidemic typhus (Rickettsia prowazeki)...
متن کاملStudies on the Cultivation of the Typhus Fever Rickettsia in the Presence of Live Tissue
1. Rickettsia prowazeki can be cultivated for many generations in vitro, without diminution in numbers or virulence, in media similar to those described by Maitland, Rivers, and others for the cultivation of certain viruses. In all probability, such cultures can be maintained indefinitely. 2. It has been impossible, thus far, to cultivate the typhus rickettsia without employing living tissue.
متن کاملA Modified Method of Obtaining Large Amounts of Rickettsia Prowazeki by Roentgen Irradiation of Rats
The radiation method described by Zinsser and Castaneda for obtaining large amounts of Rickettsia has been carried out successfully with an ordinary radiographic machine. This allows the extension of the method to those communities which do not possess a high voltage Roentgen therapy unit as originally employed.
متن کاملRickettsial hemolysis: adsorption of rickettsiae to erythrocytes.
The hemolysis of sheep red blood cells by Rickettsia prowazeki has been characterized. A requirement for the adsorption of the rickettsia to the erythrocyte was indicated. No indication of the production of a soluble hemolysin was observed. Neither adsorption nor hemolysis can proceed at 0 C. The hemolytic process is rapid with a half-time of less than 30 min, and both the rate and extent are p...
