Part 11: Fibre Bragg Grating type sensors in composites

چکیده
Introduction Recent studies have shown that Fibre Bragg Gratings are well suited to studying the mechanical behaviour of composites [1]. A Fibre Bragg Grating is a small segment of optical fibre with a core of germanium doped silica which gives a periodic and permanent perturbation of the refractive index. An FBG acts like a selective wavelength mirror, reflecting a particular wavelength (Fig. 1), called a Bragg wavelength (λB) .

متن کاملClassification of composite damage from FBG load monitoring signals
This paper describes a new method for the classification and identification of two major types of defects in composites, namely delamination and matrix cracks, by classification of the spectral features of fibre Bragg grating (FBG) signals. In aeronautical applications of composites, after a damage is detected, it is very useful to know the type of damage prior to determining the treatment meth...
متن کاملFibre Bragg Sensors Compared with Electrical Strain Gauges for Use in Force Measurement - Prospects and Potentials
− This article deals with the technical properties of fiber Bragg gratings with regard to their use as the strain-sensitive element in force transducers. Electrical strain gages are widely used in modern, precise force transducers. The electrical strain gage provides both outstanding technical properties and cost-effectiveness. Besides the electrical strain gage, the measurement principle of fi...
متن کاملTime-division-multiplexed interrogation of fibre Bragg grating sensors using laser diodes
An intensity-based technique for the interrogation of fibre Bragg grating sensors is described. The technique utilizes two longitudinal modes of a single, pulsed laser diode as a dual-wavelength source for grating illumination. Time-division-multiplexed addressing of sensor arrays in serial and tree topologies is also demonstrated.
متن کاملFibre Bragg Gratings in Embedded Microstructured Optical Fibres Allow Distinguishing between Symmetric and Anti-Symmetric Lamb Waves in Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composites
Conventional contact sensors used for Lamb wave-based ultrasonic inspection, such as piezo-electric transducers, measure omnidirectional strain and do not allow distinguishing between fundamental symmetric and anti-symmetric modes. In this paper, we show that the use of a single fibre Bragg grating created in a dedicated microstructured optical fibre allows one to directly make the distinction ...
