Phonological Reduction in Swedish

چکیده
In this paper, the importance of pronunciation variation modelling is discussed. As a first step in developing a model of Swedish pronunciation variation due to speaking style and speech rate, a tentative reduction rule system has been developed. An assessment experiment testing the impact of phonological reduction, as defined by this system, on the perceived naturalness of speech synthesis was conducted. Canonical and reduced synthetic speech stimuli with three different speech rates were presented to näıve subjects. The reduced pronunciations were significantly more often perceived as more natural than the canonical pronunciations at the higher speech rates, while there was no significant general difference in perceived naturalness depending on reduction level for the lowest rate. The dependence on speech rate for perceived naturalness was significant. A possible cause for some observed differences in perceived naturalness depending on the nature of specific stimuli is discussed.

Phonological complexity and vocabulary size in 30-month-old Swedish children
This study addresses the relationship between phonological complexity and vocabulary size in fifteen 30-month-old Swedish children, selected to cover a wide range of reported lexical development. It is in line with earlier studies indicating a relationship between phonological and lexical development in children and how it is affected by the ambient linguistic input. Phonological complexity of ...
متن کاملPhonological Demands vs. System Constraints in an L2 Setting
How can system constraints and phonological output demands influence articulation in a L2speaker? When measuring durations and articulator movements for some Swedish /V C/ and /VC / words, pronounced by a Swedish and a Polish speaker, it appeared that phonological vowel length was realized very similarly by both speakers, while complementary consonant length was applied only by the native Swedi...
متن کاملPhonological features in the bilingual lexicon: Insights from tonal accent in Swedish
Scandinavian languages like Swedish employ tonal accent as a lexical phonological feature, where suprasegmental information can be the sole factor differentiating between words. Using cross-modal semantic fragment priming we tested the following: (a) Do monolingual speakers of Swedish use tonal accent information during lexical access? (b) Do bilingual speakers, who grew up with one tonal (Swed...
متن کاملTiming of legal and illegal consonant clusters in Swedish
The timing of consonant clusters in Swedish has been studied intensively. However, from a phonological perspective coda-internal timing with regards to quantity has not yet successfully been studied. This study intends to provide more data on the duration of Swedish consonant clusters: (a) sonorant-sonorant clusters and (b) sonorant-obstruent clusters. In addition consonant clusters illegal in ...
متن کاملPhonetics and phonology of Swedish dialects around the year 2000 : a research plan
Phonetic and phonological data on today’s Swedish dialects are scarce. The aim of this project is to record and analyze comparable speech samples from about 90 dialect areas. A central theoretical goal is to establish phonetic and phonological typologies on the basis of segmental and prosodic characteristics of the Swedish dialects. A practical goal is the creation of a digital database for use...
