چکیده

Hesitations are prevalent in spontaneous speech and believed to be relevant to on-line speech planning. We tested the complexity hypothesis that speakers are more likely to need to suspend speaking, the more complex the constituent, by examining ratios of filled pauses (fillers) at clause and case boundaries with following constituents of different degrees of complexity, using ì the Corpus of spontaneous Japaneseî. The filler ratios were constantly higher as the following constituents were more complex, supporting the hypothesis. The result indicates that fillers can be clues about complexity of the upcoming constituents.

Linefeed Insertion into Japanese Spoken Monologue for Captioning

To support the real-time understanding of spoken monologue such as lectures and commentaries, the development of a captioning system is required. Fillers as Indicators of Discourse Segment Boundaries in Japanese Monologues

We investigated distribution of fillers (filled pauses) in the vicinity of boundaries of different strengths in Japanese monologues, to understand whether fillers may convey information about the location and the strength of boundaries. Consistent with the results of studies on Dutch monologues, fillers tend to increase as the boundary strength grows. It has also been revealed that fillers tend...

A Corpus-based Analysis on Prosody and Discourse Structure in Japanese Spontaneous Monologues

The aim of this paper is two folds. First, the paper attempts to investigate prosody and discourse structure in Japanese spontaneous monologues by using the prosodic labels of the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ). The analyses of F0 peak trends and prosodic breaks confirmed previous findings in [1]. Secondly, the paper attempts to evaluate the validity of prosodic labels of the X-JToBI syst...

Dependency Parsing of Japanese Spoken Monologue Based on Clause Boundaries

Spoken monologues feature greater sentence length and structural complexity than do spoken dialogues. To achieve high parsing performance for spoken monologues, it could prove effective to simplify the structure by dividing a sentence into suitable language units. This paper proposes a method for dependency parsing of Japanese monologues based on sentence segmentation. In this method, the depen...

Features of pauses and conjunctions at syntactic and discourse boundaries in Japanese monologues

Syntactic and discourse boundaries are signalled by prosodic cues as well as linguistic cues in speech. We investigated whether there is a correspondence between prosodic or linguistic cues and the boundary strengths. We measured the rates of filled pauses (FPs) and conjunctions, and the durations of silent and filled pauses and conjunctions at four types of boundaries in casual presentations i...
