Unusual Rydberg system consisting of a positively charged helium nanodroplet with an orbiting electron.

چکیده
Evidence is presented of an unusual Rydberg system consisting of a helium nanodroplet containing a positively charged sodium ion and an orbiting electron. Rydberg states of this system with principal quantum number n<20 are found to be unstable on a nanosecond time scale. In contrast, Rydberg states with n≳100 are found to have a lifetime of 1.1 μs. In addition, it is found that the ionization threshold of sodium-doped helium is broadened and redshifted with respect to that of the free atom. These observations are successfully reproduced using a pseudodiatomic description of the system in which the interactions of the sodium and its ion with the helium are calculated as the sum of pair potentials.

Squeezing a helium nanodroplet with a Rydberg electron.
We have investigated, by means of density functional theory, the structure of a "scolium", that is, an electron circulating around a positively charged 4He nanodroplet, temporarily prevented from neutralization by the helium-electron repulsion. The positive ion core resides in the center of the nanodroplet where, as a consequence of electrostriction, a strong increase in the helium density with...
متن کاملThe electronically excited states of helium clusters: an unusual example for the presence of Rydberg states in condensed matter
The nature of the electronically excited states of He clusters and their relaxation mechanisms are investigated by spectroscopy using monochromatized synchrotron radiation. Time correlated fluorescence excitation and energy resolved luminescence spectra of the clusters are recorded in separate wavelength ranges. The size of the clusters and the isotopic constitution is also varied. The spectral...
متن کاملRydberg states of alkali atoms on superfluid helium nanodroplets: inside or outside?† †Electronic supplementary information (ESI) available: Several figures detailing the results of this work. The accuracy of the Chebyshev method is addressed and additional figures are presented for other alkali metal atoms besides Rb. See DOI: 10.1039/c7cp02332d
Electronic excitations of an electron bound to an alkali metal ion inside a droplet of superfluid 4He are computed via a combination of helium density functional theory and the numerical integration of the Schrödinger equation for a single electron in a modified, He density dependent atomic pseudopotential. The application of a spectral method to the radial part of the valence electron wavefunc...
متن کاملSpectroscopy using stimulated electron–ion recombination
Spectroscopic results obtained on multiply charged few-electron ions by using laserstimulated two-step recombination in ion storage rings are presented in an overview. Line splittings in transitions between Rydberg levels were observed for helium-like and berylliumlike ions. Emphasis is given to results on the beryllium-like system N where information about the splitting between high angular mo...
متن کاملQuantum dynamics of the pick up process of atoms by superfluid helium nanodroplets: the Ne + ((4)He)1000 system.
The capture dynamics of a Ne atom by a superfluid helium nanodroplet (((4)He)N=1000; T = 0.37 K), Ne + ((4)He)N→ Ne@((4)He)N', was investigated using a quantum approach (TDDFT (helium) + quantum wave packet (Ne)) at zero angular momentum and a rather wide range of Ne atom initial mean velocities (〈v0〉: 90-1300 m s(-1)). This is probably the first quantum dynamics study focusing on the pick up p...
