Proteomics for biomedicine: a half-completed journey
نویسنده
چکیده
Although I studied physics and identify peptides in sequence databases was made possible by the Danish mathematics until the master’s level, I always knew that I wanted to get into biology, whose golden age I was sure was happening in my lifetime. When the opportunity came knocking – in the shape of John Fenn, who was spending a sabbatical at the University of Göttingen – I did not hesitate to take up his offer to come with him to Yale for my PhD. John was working on a far-out idea: that one could ionize biomolecules by applying an electric field to the outlet of a needle through which a liquid was flowing. At first there was little interest in ‘electrospray’, but as soon as it became clear that large, intact proteins survive this process (Mann et al, 1989; Meng et al, 1988), the community was hooked. This included the Nobel Prize committee, who gave John a share of their prize for chemistry in 2002.

Half-Century Journey from Synthetic Organic Chemistry to Mathematical Stereochemistry through Chemoinformatics
My half-century journey started from synthetic organic chemistry. During the first stage of my journey, my interest in stereochemistry was initiated through the investigation on the participation of steric effects in reactive intermediates, cylophanes, strained heterocycles, and organic compounds for photography. In chemoinformatics as the next stage of the journey, I proposed the concept of im...
متن کاملEvaluating The Effective Factors in Pregnancy after Intrauterine Insemination: A Retrospective Study
Background Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) in conjunction with intrauterine inseminations (IUI) are commonly used to treat infertile couples. In this study we evaluated the relationship between IUI outcome and special causes of infertility. We also aimed to examine parameters that might predict success following IUI. MaterialsAndMethods In this cross-sectional study, we included 994 I...
متن کاملPostgenomics: Proteomics and Bioinformatics in Cancer Research
Now that the human genome is completed, the characterization of the proteins encoded by the sequence remains a challenging task. The study of the complete protein complement of the genome, the "proteome," referred to as proteomics, will be essential if new therapeutic drugs and new disease biomarkers for early diagnosis are to be developed. Research efforts are already underway to develop the t...

Surface glycoproteins regulate nearly every extracellular event and they are dynamic for cells to adapt to the ever-changing extracellular environment. These glycoproteins contain a wealth of information on cellular development and disease states, and have significant biomedical implications. Systematic investigation of surface glycoproteins will result in a better understanding of surface prot...
