The greenhouse gas abatement potential of enterprise cloud computing
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we present a dynamic, country level model and methodology to determine the energy related Green House Gas (GHG) abatement potential of cloud computing. The methodology presented includes variables for market penetration, organisation size and organisational adoption of on-premise and cloud computing. Using the current enterprise cloud service applications of email, customer relationship management (CRM) and groupware against selected global countries we have calculated that 4.5 million tonnes of CO2e could be reduced with an 80% market penetration. The majority of savings were calculated to be from small and medium size organisations. A sensitivity analysis of the market penetration and current organisational cloud adoption highlights the possible large variability in overall energy and GHG reductions. An analysis of the model and data used within this study illustrates a requirement for industry and academia to work closely in order to reach the large energy reductions possible with enterprise cloud computing.

Cloud computing is a new discussion in enterprise IT. It has already become popular in terms of distributed technology in some companies. It enables managers to setup and run the intended businesses by avoiding excessive spending on computers, software and hiring expert staff, which proves to be cost effective. Cloud computing also helps users pay for the IT services without spending massive am...
متن کاملClimate change abatement and farm profitability analyses across agricultural environments
Management practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions from farms or increase on-farm carbon storage can contribute to climate change mitigation. Farmers, however, are only likely to adopt new management practices if they contribute to farm profitability. We use the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator (APSIM) to simulate how different cropping practices contribute to greenhouse gas aba...

متن کاملA Near Optimal Approach in Choosing The Appropriate Physical Machines for Live Virtual Machines Migration in Cloud Computing
Migration of Virtual Machine (VM) is a critical challenge in cloud computing. The process to move VMs or applications from one Physical Machine (PM) to another is known as VM migration. In VM migration several issues should be considered. One of the major issues in VM migration problem is selecting an appropriate PM as a destination for a migrating VM. To face this issue, several approaches are...
