Classifying Urban Rainfall Extremes Using Weather Radar Data: An Application to the Greater New York Area
نویسندگان
چکیده
Extreme rainfall events, specifically in urban areas, have dramatic impacts on society and can lead to loss of life and property.Despite these hazards, little is known about the city-scale variability of heavy rainfall events. In the current study, gridded stage IV radar data from 2002 to 2015 are employed to investigate the clustering and the spatial variability of simultaneous rainfall exceedances in the greater New York area. Multivariate clustering based on partitioning around medoids is applied to the extreme rainfall events’ average intensity and areal extent for the 1and 24-h accumulated rainfall during winter (December–February) and summer (June–August) seasons. The atmospheric teleconnections of the daily extreme event for winter and summer are investigated using compositing of ERA-Interim. For both 1and 24-h durations, the winter season extreme rainfall events have larger areal extent than the summer season extreme rainfall events.Winter extreme events are associated with deep and organized circulation patterns that lead to more areal extent, and the summer events are associated with localized frontal systems that lead to smaller areal extents. The average intensities of the 1-h extreme rainfall events in summer aremuch higher than the average intensities of the 1-h extreme rainfall events in winter.A clear spatial demarcation exists within the five boroughs inNewYorkCity for winter extreme events. Resultant georeferenced cluster maps can be extremely useful in risk analysis and green infrastructures planning as well as sewer systems’ management at the city scale.

Weather radar rainfall data in urban hydrology
Application of weather radar data in urban hydrological applications has evolved significantly during the past decade as an alternative to traditional rainfall observations with rain gauges. Advances in radar hardware, data processing, numerical models, and emerging fields within urban hydrology necessitate an updated review of the state of the art in such radar rainfall data and applications. ...
متن کاملApplication of Local Area Weather Radar (LAWR) in relation to hydrological modelling – Identification of the pitfalls in using high resolution radar rainfall data
Recent analysis of spatial and temporal resolution of rainfall and the advent of small inexpensive rainfall radars has lead to increased use of radar estimated rainfall as input to hydrological models especially in urban areas. Detailed rainfall measurements have indicated a very high spatial variation of up to 100 % of a distance of less that 200 m over a 3 hour rainfall event [Jensen and Pede...
متن کاملUrban flood prediction in real-time from weather radar and rainfall data using artificial neural networks
This paper describes the application of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as Data Driven Models (DDMs) to predict urban flooding in real-time based on weather radar and/or raingauge rainfall data. A 123manhole combined sewer sub-network from Keighley, West Yorkshire, UK is used to demonstrate the methodology. An ANN is configured for prediction of flooding at manholes based on rainfall input. I...
متن کاملSpatial Analysis of High-Resolution Radar Rainfall and Citizen-Reported Flash Flood Data in Ultra-Urban New York City
New York City (NYC) is an ultra-urban region, with over 50% impervious cover and buried stream channels. Traditional flood studies rely on the presence of stream gages to detect flood stage and discharge, but these methods cannot be used in ultra-urban areas. Here we create a high-resolution radar rainfall dataset for NYC and utilize citizen and expert reports of flooding throughout the city to...
متن کاملOn the use of radar reflectivity for estimation of the areal reduction factor
In order to estimate the rainfall fields over an entire basin raingauge, pointwise measurements need to be interpolated and the small-scale variability of rainfall fields can lead to biases in the rain rate estimation over an entire basin, above all for small or medium size mountainous and urban catchments. For these reasons, several raingauges should be installed in different places in order t...
