چکیده

This thesis provides an analysis of scrambling, following the Minimalist program of Chomsky 1992, examining Hindi as a case study and occasionally making comparisons with Japanese. The first major claim is that there are two kinds of operations that yield scrambling. One type, called outer scrambling, is an operator-variable construction and is the result of movement. The other type, called Inner scrambling, is the result of several conspiring factors that allow permutation without movement. These factors are triggered by (1) the strength feature of functional heads (2) economy principles that hold at phonological form and (3) full interpretation, which causes the Agr structure to be deleted after its agreement relations have been established. These factors cause TnsP to collapse into an N-ary branching structure containing the arguments of the verb. It is assumed that linear order is not fixed until spellout. Therefore, the N-ary branching structure is free to yield and hence no trace of movement, Inner scrambling is not subject to reconstruction effects. Outer scrambling, since it is an operator-variable construction, is subject to reconstruction effects.

Control and Reconstruction Effects of Adjuncts in Hindi

The reconstruction effects1 of arguments have been discussed extensively in the literature. The theory developed in Mahajan 1990 addresses Hindi scrambling and accounts for reconstruction effects of arguments. The core of that theory is that scrambling is properly factored into three distinct types of movement: (i) A-movement to the SPEC position of a functional head, called Argument Shift, (ii...

Scrambling: Nontriggered Chain Formation in OV Languages

In this paper we argue for the following properties of clause-bound scrambling, as they are manifested in German. First, scrambling presupposes head-final projections. Only selected constituents, notably arguments, scramble, the reason being that phrases selected by a head have a unique base order. Second, scrambling involves antecedent-gap dependencies with A-chain properties. Third, scramblin...

An Experimental Investigation of Water Effects on Asphaltene Surface Behavior through Interfacial Tension Measurements

As a physiochemical property, asphaltenes are known to be one the most surface active compounds in crude oil. Due to such property, their behavior is most probably influenced by fluid-fluid interactions at the contact surface (interface). Potentially and naturally, in most cases, water is in contact with crude oil and is co-produced with it as well. Considering that asphaltene molecules are pol...
