Bare plural nominals in Romanian and French

چکیده
In this paper we investigate Bare Plurals (BPs; NPPL) in English and Romanian and Bare Plural Partitives (BParts; i.e. des NPPL) in French. Romanian BPs and French BParts only share with English BPs the existential interpretation with obligatory narrow scope. We propose that this reading shared by all three comes from the same pieces: a non-kind-selecting predicate, a kind-denoting argument, and a special combination operation ‘Derived Kind Predication’ (DKP) glueing the two together by providing local existential quantification over instances of the kind. French BParts only have this reading because the partitive de spells out DKP. The kind and generic patterns for English, French, and Romanian fall out once we consider what happens when we remove DKP from this structure.

The syntax and semantics of bare nominal expressions has been the subject of much research over the past few years. Two fundamental distinctions are generally assumed: bare nominals are generally restricted to plural and mass terms (unless they are proper names) and the "interesting" cases of bare nominals are those that appear in argument positions. We will call the first distinction the singu...

متن کاملThe Semantics of Generic Quantification in Brazilian Portuguese
This paper investigates the semantics of kind-referring expressions and of generic quantification in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). It may thus be taken as a contribution to the development of a more accurate understanding of genericity as a crosslinguistic phenomenon. In BP genericity may be expressed by both definite singular (1) and definite plural (2) nominals, and also by indefinite nominals s...

This paper deals with differences between Hindi bare nominals in the availability of existential readings and the possibility of discourse anaphora. Hindi bare singulars are more restricted than bare plurals in both respects. These differences are discussed in light of two questions that are of relevance beyond the facts of Hindi. Is reference to kinds a mediating factor in object level quantif...
متن کاملArticle Use Across Languages: an OT Typology
Many languages use definite and indefinite articles to signal the referential status of individuals in conversational space. But articles are not necessary to set up or maintain discourse reference, as witnessed by the fact that languages can also get by with bare nominals. Similarly, we find that many, but not all languages use a morphological singular/plural contrast to distinguish reference ...
