SSIs caused by airborne contaminants offer an under-addressed area for prevention

چکیده
Hospital operating rooms are among the most infection-sensitive environments in healthcare facilities. Surgical procedures increase patient vulnerability to pathogens transmitted from surgical personnel, surgical equipment, the air and a patient’s own skin flora. Despite advancements in surgical techniques and infection-prevention methods, two out of every 100 surgeries in the U.S. result in surgical site infections (SSIs), resulting in an estimated 290,485 surgical site infections per year.

Glycopeptides are no more effective than beta-lactam agents for prevention of surgical site infection after cardiac surgery: a meta-analysis.
A meta-analysis was performed to investigate whether a switch from beta-lactams to glycopeptides for cardiac surgery prophylaxis should be advised. Results of 7 randomized trials (5761 procedures) that compared surgical site infections (SSIs) in subjects receiving glycopeptide prophylaxis with SSIs in those who received beta -lactam prophylaxis were pooled. Neither agent proved to be superior f...
متن کاملAntibiotic resistance in common pathogens reinforces the need to minimise surgical site infections.
Surgical site infections (SSIs) remain an important cause of postoperative morbidity and mortality and generate considerable additional healthcare and societal costs. Most SSIs are caused by skin-derived bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci. Antimicrobial resistance among these and other clinically important pathogens is an increasing problem. Thus, while ...
متن کاملAirborne particulates in the OR environment.
Intraoperative sampling of airborne particulates is rarely performed in the OR environment because of technical difficulties associated with sampling methodologies and because of the common belief that airborne contamination is infrequently associated with surgical site infections (SSIs). In this study, investigators recovered non-viable (i.e., lint) and viable (i.e., microorganisms) particulat...
متن کاملSurgical site infections: epidemiology, microbiology and prevention.
Surgical site infections (SSIs) are defined as infections occurring up to 30 days after surgery (or up to one year after surgery in patients receiving implants) and affecting either the incision or deep tissue at the operation site. Despite improvements in prevention, SSIs remain a significant clinical problem as they are associated with substantial mortality and morbidity and impose severe dem...
متن کاملCurrent Strategies for Prevention of Surgical Site Infections.
Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a common complication that follows all types of operative procedures. These infections are usually caused by the exogenous and endogenous microorganisms that enter the operative wound during the course of surgery. The general and procedure-specific risk factors for the development of SSI have been identified and are discussed in this article. Factors that inf...
