چکیده

We report a web service for flute players, ‘The Virtual Boehm Flute’, that provides alternative fingerings which may be easier to play, less awkward to finger and/or more in tune for different circumstances. It also provides possible fingerings for multiphonics (chords). It uses an expert system that predicts the playability of notes from features in the input impedance spectra, based on the playability of 957 impedance minima as determined by an expert flutist. Used in conjunction with a theoretical model, developed from detailed experimental measurements, it can predict the acoustic impedance spectrum for 39,744 different acoustic configurations of the flute. The resulting database provides, via a musician-friendly interface, the predicted possible notes and multiphonics for any selected fingering, and all the possible fingerings predicted to play a desired note or multiphonic. The service is at http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/music/flute

The 'virtual Flute': Acoustic Modelling at the Service of Players and Composers

Among the difficulties facing woodwind players are (i) awkward fingerings for rapid passages, (ii) intonation defects in instruments, and (iii) performing exotic effects such as microtones and multiphonics. In many cases these may be ameliorated by alternative fingerings. We report the construction and use of a web service for the flute. An expert system was trained by an experienced flutist to...

The Virtual Flute: An Advanced Fingering Guide Generated Via Machine Intelligence

The Virtual Flute is a web service that provides many thousands of machine-predicted alternative fingerings. Alternative fingerings can offer variations in intonation and timbre, and can be easier to play in different musical contexts. Many play multiphonics. An advanced fingering guide is invaluable when exotic effects and demanding passages are required of the player. The Virtual Flute uses a...

The Baroque and Classical Flutes and the Boehm Revolution

The Baroque and early Classical flutes have six finger holes that are small enough to be covered by the unaided fingers, and also positioned so as to allow this. They have a partly conical bore, which is narrower than that of the Boehm flute. We compare these instruments in terms of their sound spectra and intonation, and we explain some of the features of these in terms of their acoustic imped...

Saxophone Acoustics: Introducing a Compendium of Impedance and Sound Spectra

We introduce a web-based database that gives details of the acoustics of soprano and tenor saxophones for all standard fingerings and some others. It has impedance spectra measured at the mouthpiece and sound files for each standard fingering. We use these experimental impedance spectra to explain some features of saxophone acoustics, including the linear effects of the bell, mouthpiece, reed, ...

Numerical calculation of flute impedances and standing waves

The purpose of this study was to investigate a numerical method for calculating impedances and standing wave patterns of flute structures. To this end, the physical dimensions of flute joints and tone holes were used to compute impedance and standing waves as a function of frequency for several different fingerings. Numerically computed resonance frequencies for head joint, middle and foot join...
