Intestinal ischemia following laparoscopic surgery: a case series

چکیده
UNLABELLED INTRODUCTION Intestinal ischemia is a rare complication of laparoscopic surgery. Its prognosis depends on a high index of suspicion and effective early treatment. CASE PRESENTATION In the present report, we describe three cases where intestinal ischemia developed following laparoscopic surgery. Case 1 concerns a 52-year-old Caucasian man who developed large bowel ischemia following laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgery. Case 2 concerns an 82-year-old Caucasian woman who developed fatal intestinal ischemia following laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Case 3 concerns a 58-year old Caucasian woman who developed right-sided lower intestinal ischemia following open cholecystectomy. CONCLUSIONS Intestinal ischemia is a rare complication of laparoscopic surgery. The identification of high-risk patients is an essential primary preventive measure. A high index of suspicion is required to make an early diagnosis, which may help improve outcomes.

Intestinal Ischemia After Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
OBJECTIVES Intestinal ischemia is a rarely reported complication following laparoscopic cholecystectomy. We describe a case of massive small intestinal necrosis 3 days following this procedure. An autopsy determined the cause to be splanchnic hypoperfusion, likely due to the physiologic changes induced by the pneumoperitoneum necessary to conduct the surgery. We sought to determine whether all ...
متن کاملFatal Intestinal Ischemia after Laparoscopic Correction of Incisional Hernia
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Intestinal ischemia is a very rare complication of laparoscopic procedures. In this report, we describe the first case of fatal large bowel ischemia in the aftermath of laparoscopic incisional hernia repair. METHODS A literature search using PubMed was performed to identify all published cases of intestinal ischemia following laparoscopic procedures. RESULTS Our se...
متن کاملParacecal hernia with intestinal ischemia treated with laparoscopic assisted surgery
INTRODUCTION Paracecal hernia is rare, and strangulation with ischemia has been infrequently observed in the limited number of published reports on paracecal hernias. PRESENTATION OF CASE We describe a case of an incarcerated paracecal hernia with resultant ischemic bowel that was successfully treated with laparoscopic-assisted surgery. A 54-year-old man who had not undergone any surgery prev...
متن کاملAcute Portomesenteric Venous Thrombosis following Laparoscopic Small Bowel Resection and Ventral Hernia Repair
Acute portomesenteric venous thrombosis is a rare but life-threatening complication of laparoscopic surgery that has been described in literature. Prompt diagnosis and early initiation of treatment are vital to prevent life-threatening complications such as mesenteric ischemia and infarction. A 51-year-old lady had laparoscopic small bowel resection and primary anastomosis with ventral hernia r...

We read with great interest the article titled “Intestinal ischemia after laparoscopic cholecystectomy” in the most recent issue of JSLS authored by Drs Leduc and Mitchell. In their manuscript, the authors describe their experience with a case of mesenteric vascular catastrophe after a laparoscopic procedure. In addition, the authors summarize the other reported cases they were able to find as ...
