Bacterial Endocarditis Due to an Actinobacillus.
A case of subacute bacterial endocarditis due to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans followed dental extraction under penicillin cover. Isolation of the organism was only achieved by incubating blood cultures in a CO(2)-enriched atmosphere. The patient was successfully treated with streptomycin.

A case of subacute bacterial endocarditis due to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is reported. The patient was successfully treated first by a combination of gentamicin and ampicillin and then, because of severe allergic reactions, ampicillin was replaced by co-trimoxazole; symptoms did not recur and blood cultures remained sterile. A synoptic table is presented of 19 reported cases of infe...
متن کاملEndocarditis caused by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans.
Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is a gram-negative coccobacillus which is a very rare cause of bacterial endocarditis. Preexisting cardiac lesions are a main contributing factor, and antibiotic prophylaxis has long been felt necessary before dental or other manipulation to prevent endocarditis. Penicillin in combination with an aminoglycoside has been the most often used treatment regimen....
متن کاملHaemophilus Aphrophilus Associated Spleen Abscess: An Unusual Presentation of Subacute Endocarditis
The HACEK group of bacteria (Haemophilus spp., Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens, Kingella spp.), is uncommon pathogens of infective endocarditis, but can cause life-threatening events such as heart failure or formation of lethal emboli. Here we report a 58-year-old Asian man with a past history of congenital valvular heart disease who presented ...
متن کاملActinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans causing a mediastinal abscess.
We report what may be the first documented case of an anterior mediastinal abscess due to infection by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans. This small, fastidious Gram-negative coccobacillus is a normal component of the oral flora of healthy individuals,' but rarely a human pathogen. It was first described in 1912 by Klinger2 in association with actinomycosis and has since been identified as t...
