PLANET II: A Microlensing and Transit Search for Extrasolar Planets
نویسنده
چکیده
Due to their extremely small luminosity compared to the stars they orbit, planets outside our own Solar System are extraordinarily difficult to detect directly in optical light. Careful photometric monitoring of distant stars, however, can reveal the presence of exoplanets via the microlensing or eclipsing effects they induce. The international PLANET collaboration is performing such monitoring using a cadre of semi-dedicated telescopes around the world. Their results constrain the number of gas giants orbiting 1–7 AU from the most typical stars in the Galaxy. Upgrades in the program are opening regions of “exoplanet discovery space” – toward smaller masses and larger orbital radii – that are inaccessible to the Doppler velocity technique. 1. Looking for Exoplanets through the Lens of Gravity The Doppler velocity technique, which measures the small to and fro motion induced in a parent star by an orbiting planet, has clearly demonstrated that several percent of solar-type stars have planets very unlike those in the Solar System (Marcy, Cochran & Mayor 2000). Known extrasolar planets are plotted with the nine Solar System planets in Figure 1. With the exception of the few bodies orbiting dead stellar cores known as pulsars, exoplanets discovered

Ground-based Microlensing Surveys
Microlensing is a proven extrasolar planet search method that has already yielded the detection of four exoplanets. These detections have changed our understanding of planet formation “beyond the snowline” by demonstrating that Neptune-mass planets with separations of several AU are common. Microlensing is sensitive to planets that are generally inaccessible to other methods, in particular cool...
متن کاملMicrolensing search for extrasolar planets: observational strategy, discoveries and implications
Microlensing has proven to be a valuable tool to search for extrasolar planets of Jovianto Super-Earth-mass planets at orbits of a few AU. Since planetary signals are of very short duration, an intense and continuous monitoring is required. This is achieved by groundbased networks of telescopes (PLANET/RoboNET, μFUN) following up targets, which are identified as microlensing events by single de...

متن کاملImpact of Orbital Eccentricity on the Detection of Transiting Extrasolar Planets
For extrasolar planets with orbital periods, P>10 days, radial velocity surveys find non-circular orbital eccentricities are common, 〈e〉 ∼ 0.3. Future surveys for extrasolar planets using the transit technique will also have sensitivity to detect these longer period planets. Orbital eccentricity affects the detection of extrasolar planets using the transit technique in two opposing ways: an enh...

Future high precision photometric measurements of transiting extrasolar planets promise to tell us much about the characteristics of these systems. We examine how atmospheric lensing and (projected) planet oblateness/ellipticity modify transit light curves. The large density gradients expected in planet atmospheres can offset the unfavorably large observer-lens to source-lens distance ratio, an...
