The Transitivity and Asymmetry of Actual Causation
The counterfactual tradition to defining actual causation has come a long way since Lewis started it off. However there are still important open problems that need to be solved. One of them is the (in)transitivity of causation. Endorsing transitivity was a major source of trouble for the approach taken by Lewis, which is why currently most approaches reject it. But transitivity has never lost i...
متن کاملCauses of causes
When is a cause of a cause of an effect also a cause of that effect? The right answer is either “Sometimes” or “Always”. In favour of “Always”, transitivity is considered by some to be necessary for distinguishing causes from redundant noncausal events. Moreover transitivity may be motivated by an interest in an unselective notion of causation, untroubled by principles of invidious discriminati...
متن کاملSingular Limits of Absolutely Continuous Invariant Measures for Families of Transitive Maps
We investigate the dependence on the parameters of absolutely continuous invariant measures for a family of piecewise linear piecewise expanding maps. We construct an example to show that the transitivity of the maps does not imply the convergence of those measures to the absolutely continuous invariant measure for the limit map.
متن کاملAn ARFIMA Model for Volatility Does Not Imply Long Memory
Jiang and and Tian (2010) have estimated an ARFIMA model for stock return volatility. We argue that this result does not imply actual 'long memory' in such time series -as any kind of instability in the population mean yields apparent fractional integration as a statistical artifact. Alternative high-pass filters for studying stock market volatility data are suggested.
متن کاملA Transitivity Heuristic of Probabilistic Causal Reasoning
In deterministic causal chains the relations „A causes B’ and „B causes C’ imply that „A causes C’. However, this is not necessarily the case for probabilistic causal relationships: A may probabilistically cause B, and B may probabilistically cause C, but A does not probabilistically cause C, but rather ¬C. The normal transitive inference is only valid when the Markov condition holds, a key fea...
