Amplitude-dependent attenuation of compressive waves in curved granular crystals constrained by elastic guides

چکیده
We study the wave propagation in a curved chain of spherical particles constrained by elastic guides under the axial impact of a falling mass. We characterize the force transmission properties of the chain by varying the striker's mass and the chain's curvature. Experimental tests demonstrate amplitude-dependent attenuation of compressive waves propagated through the curved chain. We also show that the properties of the transmitted signals are sensitive to the chain's curvature. Numerical simulations, based on an approach that combines discrete element (DE) and finite element (FE) methods, agree well with the experimental results. The findings suggest that hybrid structures composed of granular particles and linear elastic media can be employed as new passive acoustic filtering materials that selectively transmit or mitigate excitations in a desired range of pressure amplitudes.

Frequency- and Amplitude-Dependent Transmission of Stress Waves in Curved One-Dimensional Granular Crystals Composed of Diatomic Particles
We study the stress wave propagation in curved chains of particles (granular crystals) confined by bent elastic guides. We report the frequencyand amplitude-dependent filtering of transmitted waves in relation to various impact conditions and geometrical configurations. The granular crystals studied consist of alternating cylindrical and spherical particles pre-compressed with variable static l...
متن کاملEffect of Rotation and Stiffness on Surface Wave Propagation in a Elastic Layer Lying Over a Generalized Thermodiffusive Elastic Half-Space with Imperfect Boundary
The present investigation is to study the surface waves propagation with imperfect boundary between an isotropic elastic layer of finite thickness and a homogenous isotropic thermodiffusive elastic half- space with rotation in the context of Green-Lindsay (G-L model) theory. The secular equation for surface waves in compact form is derived after developing the mathematical model. The phase velo...
متن کاملWave Propagation in a Layer of Binary Mixture of Elastic Solids
This paper concentrates on the propagation of waves in a layer of binary mixture of elastic solids subjected to stress free boundaries. Secular equations for the layer corresponding to symmetric and antisymmetric wave modes are derived in completely separate terms. The amplitudes of displacement components and specific loss for both symmetric and antisymmetric modes are obtained. The effect of ...

The use of acoustic waves in researches related to sea water is of most importance among scientists recently. Since these waves are the only waves, transmitted in water with lowest attenuation and high speed, they can be used in many scientific fields. The main goal of this research is to better understand the physics and mechanisms of sound-seabed interaction, including acoustic penetration, p...
متن کاملAmplitude-dependent phononic processes in a diatomic granular chain in the weakly nonlinear regime.
Nonlinear acoustic processes of second harmonic generation and nonlinear resonances in a diatomic granular chain (a granular phononic crystal) with static precompression are reported. The observed nonlinear self-action process which manifests itself as shifts in resonance frequencies of the chain leads to amplitude-dependent band edges: the properties of the phononic crystal change as a functio...
