چکیده

Emerging Infectious Diseases • www.cdc.gov/eid • Vol. 15, No. 8, August 2009 1323 Our patient likely had rickettsial infection acquired in Honduras. We present this case to alert clinicians to consider the diagnosis of rickettsial infections in the Americas, even if infections have not been previously documented in a specific country or region. Because rickettsial infections can be severe and are treatable, the clinician should consider rickettsial infections in returned travelers with compatible clinical findings. Our case also demonstrates the potential role of travelers as sentinels of emerging infectious diseases.

KI and WU Polyomaviruses and CD4+ Cell Counts in HIV-1–infected Patients, Italy

To investigate an association between KI and WU polyomavirus (KIPyV and WUPyV) infections and CD4+ cell counts, we tested HIV-1-positive patients and blood donors. No association was found between cell counts and virus infections in HIV-1-positive patients. Frequency of KIPyV infection was similar for both groups. WUPyV was more frequent in HIV-1-positive patients.

Detection of WU polyomavirus in cerebrospinal fluid specimen from a patient with AIDS and suspected progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

To the Editor—We read with interest the article recently published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases by Sharp et al. [1], who investigated whether the newly discovered KI, WU, and Merkel cell poly-omaviruses could persist and reactivate in immunodeficient patients. To this aim, the authors screened for the presence of ge-nomic sequences of KI, WU, and Merkel cell polyomaviruses, in addition...

Human polyomaviruses, WU and KI in HIV exposed children with acute lower respiratory tract infections in hospitals in South Africa.

BACKGROUND The importance of two recently identified polyomaviruses, WUV and KIV, as respiratory pathogens in populations with a high HIV prevalence needs to be defined, since human polyomaviruses can cause significant morbidity and mortality in patients with immunosuppression. Geographic distribution and disease association of WUV and KIV genotypes are not yet clearly defined. OBJECTIVES To ...

Detection and discrimination of WU/KI polyomaviruses by real-time PCR with melting curve analysis.

WU and KI polyomaviruses are novel viruses of the Polyomaviridae family, which have been identified recently in respiratory secretions from patients with acute respiratory tract infection. Their potential role in respiratory disease is still unclear and requires additional investigation. To facilitate further studies and diagnosis, a real-time PCR with melting curve analysis was optimized and e...

Infrequent Detection of KI, WU and MC Polyomaviruses in Immunosuppressed Individuals with or without Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy

Conflicting prevalence of newly identified KI (KIPyV), WU (WUPyV) and Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCPyV) polyomaviruses have been reported in progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) patient samples, ranging from 0 to 14.3%. We analyzed the prevalence of these polyomaviruses in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and bone marrow samples from PML patients, im...
