An ultracold electron source as an injector for a compact SASE-FEL

چکیده
Ultracold electron sources based on near-threshold photoionization of laser-cooled atomic gases can produce ultrashort electron pulses with a brightness potentially exceeding conventional pulsed electron sources. They are presently being developed for single shot ultrafast electron diffraction, where a bunch charge of 100 fC is sufficient. For application as an injector for x-ray free electron lasers (FEL) a larger bunch charge is generally required. Here we present preliminary calculations of an ultracold electron source operating at bunch charges up to 1 pC. We discuss the relevant bunch degradation processes that occur when the charge is increased. Using general particle tracer tracking simulations we show that bunches can be produced of sufficient quality for driving a 1 Å self amplified spontaneous emission free electron laser (SASE-FEL) at 1.3 GeV electron energy. In addition we speculate on the possibility of using the ultracold source for driving a 15MeV SASE-FEL in Compton backscatter configuration into the quantum FEL regime.

Proposal for a IR Waveguide SASE FEL at the PEGASUS Injector
Free Electron Lasers up to the visible regime are dominated by diffraction effects, resulting in a radiation size much larger than the electron beam. Thus the effective field amplitude at the location of the electron beam, driving the FEL process, is reduced. By using a waveguide, the radiation field is confined within a smaller aperture and an enhancement of the FEL performance can be expected...
متن کاملThe FEL Program at the PEGASUS Injector
The PEGASUS photo injector at UCLA can produce a photo-electron beam with a normalized emittance of 2 mm·mrad at an energy of 12-15 MeV, capable of driving a Free-Electron Laser in the mid IR regime. The FEL program, associated with the PEGASUS injector and presented here, is based on a Self-Amplifying Spontaneous Emission (SASE) FEL. The studies focus on increasing the efficiency of an FEL by ...

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a SASE 1.5-15 Å x-ray Free-Electron Laser (FEL) facility under construction at SLAC [1], and presently in an advanced phase of commissioning. The injector, linac, and new bunch compressors were commissioned in 2007 [2] and 2008 [3], establishing the necessary electron beam brightness at 14 GeV. The final phase of commissioning, including the FEL undulat...

VISA (Visible to Infrared SASE Amplifier) is a high-gain self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) free-electron laser (FEL), which achieved saturation at 840 nm within a single-pass 4-m undulator. The experiment was performed at the Accelerator Test Facility at BNL, using a high brightness 70-MeV electron beam. A gain length shorter than 18 cm has been obtained, yielding a total gain of 2 x 1...

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) Low-Energy Undulator Test Line (LEUTL) project was originally intended to test and characterize advanced undulator designs via electron beambased diagnostics technique. It is presently being used to conduct free electron laser (FEL) research for a future fourth-generation light source. The APS injector linac has been upgraded to deliver a beam suitable for these...
