چکیده
While there appears to be general agreement that adrenocortical deficiency results in a reduction of gastric secretory activity both in man (1-6) and in animals (7-11), no such unanimity of opinion exists regarding the effects of increased activity of the adrenal cortex on gastric secretion. Whereas some studies have shown that the administration of ACTH or of adrenocortical steroids may increase gastric acid and pepsin secretion (1214), others have failed to show any significant increase in acid or pepsin output by the stomach during the administration of ACTH (15-17) or cortisone or hydrocortisone (18, 19). Part of the confusion regarding any stimulant effect of increased adrenocortical activity stems from the use of urinary pepsinogen (uropepsin) levels as an index of gastric secretion. In this study the effects of 8-hour infusions of ACTH, hydrocortisone, corticosterone, prednisolone, and aldosterone in normal males on the volume, acid, pepsin, and viscosity of gastric juice were studied, together with simultaneous measurements of blood and urinary pepsinogen. These results were compared with the effects of infusion of the vehicle alone and contrasted to the effects of a 4-hour infusion of histamine. The results indicate that in general the hormones did not produce stimulation of gastric secretion compared with a known stimulant such as histamine. An analysis of changes in urinary pepsinogen excretion indicates that the glucocorticoids in1 Presented before the National Meeting of the American Federation for Clinical Research at Atlantic City, May 1, 1955.

The effect of ACTH and pathological increases in adrenal cortical function on urinary alpha-ketolic steroid metabolites.
Previous studies ( 1 ) have shown that the specific alpha-ketolic steroid metabolites found in the urine after administration of a known alphaketolic steroid reflect, to a limited extent, the nature of the precursor. With this study as a baseline, we have determined the major urinary alphaketolic steroid metabolites found after intravenous infusion of human subjects with ACTH, and some of those...
متن کاملThe effect of bromocriptine on basal and histamine-stimulated gastric acid secretion in anesthetized rats
Introduction: The protective and antisecretory effects of dopamine agonists on the stomach have been already reported, but the effect of bromocriptine (D2 dopamine agonist) on histamine stimulated gastric acid secretion (GAS) needs to be investigated. Methods: For gastric sampling, animals were anesthetized and a polyethylen tube was introduced into the stomach through esophagus. A cannula ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Acute Consumption of Heroin on Basal and Vagal-Stimulated Gastric Acid and Pepsin Secretion in Rat
Background: Opioid peptides and their receptors are present in the majority of body tissues including gastrointestinal tract. Heroin is one of the opioid derivatives that abuse increasingly today. So far, there is no study on the effect of acute heroin administration on gastric acid and pepsin secretion. Objective: To define the effect of the acute heroin consumption on basal and vagal-stimu...
متن کاملThe Effect of Intravascular Injection of Ghrelin on the Mean Plasma Concentrations of Insulin and ACTH in Immature Camels Fed with Diets Containing Different Levels of their Energy Requirements
Introduction: Ghrelin is a peptide hormone secreted from the stomach with both endocrine and paracrine effects. Ghrelin and its mRNA as well as growth hormone (GH) secretagogue receptor mRNAs are expressed in the pancreas and islet cells and regulate insulin release. Also the immounoreactivity of ghrelin is proved to be high in the hypothalamus and parts of the brain responsible for the re...
متن کاملThe effects of aqueous extract of Aloe vera leaves on the gastric acid secretion and brain and intestinal water content following acetic acid- induced gastric ulcer in male rats
Objective: Gut–brain axis (GBA) is very important in creation and modulation of gastrointestinal problems. Aloe vera gel has gastroprotective properties. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of aqueous extract of Aloe vera leaves on the gastric acid secretion and brain and intestinal water content following acetic acid gastric ulcer induction. Materials and Methods: Gastric ulce...
