THREAT BY ASSOCIATION: MINIMAL GROUP AFFILIATION AND ITS OUTCOMEFOR STEREOTYPE THREATbyERIC W. FULLERAugust 2010Adviser: Dr. Rusty McIntyre Major: Psychology (Social)Degree: Master of ArtsStereotype threat has been shown to be an important cause of performancedetriments in various social groups. It has also been theorized that stereotype threatcould be applicable to any group so long as the individual believes their performancemay reinforce the negative stereotype. The current work attempts to induce stereotypethreat in participants believing they belong to an experimentally created and negativelystereotyped group using a minimal group paradigm. Across two studies there did notappear to be significant performance changes typically observed in stereotype threatresearch. Various cognitive measures and post-performance inquiries did generallysupport claims that participants were identifying and processing the stereotypesaccording to the instructions provided, suggesting that although performance was not affected, traditionally thought stereotype threat processes were occurring. Unexpectedgender effects were also observed in both performance and post-test measures and areexplored where appropriate. Suggestions for future iterations of the current work aresuggested in light of the unsupported hypotheses.

Many studies using cognitive tasks have found that stereotype threat, or concern about confirming a negative stereotype about one's group, debilitates performance. The few studies that documented similar effects on sensorimotor performance have used only relatively coarse measures to quantify performance. This study tested the effect of stereotype threat on a rhythmic ball bouncing task, where ...

متن کاملStigma and Glucose Levels: Testing Ego Depletion and Arousal Explanations of Stereotype Threat Effects
Stereotype threat research shows that when stigmatized group membership is made salient, group members' cognitive performance is lowered; however, the mechanism through which this effect operates is not well understood. This study tests between arousal and ego depletion accounts of stereotype threat by examining whether stereotype threat effects are mitigated or exacerbated by increasing glucos...
متن کاملTeaching Stereotype Threat as a Means of Improving Women’s Math Performance
We tested whether informing women about stereotype threat is a useful intervention to improve their performance in a threatening testing situation. Men and women completed difficult math problems described either as a problem-solving task or as a math test. In a third (teaching-intervention) condition, the test was also described as a math test, but participants were additionally informed that ...
