چکیده

While visual feedback is dominant in Virtual Environments, the use of other modalities like haptics and acoustics can enhance believability, immersion, and interaction performance. Haptic feedback is especially helpful for many interaction tasks like working with medical or precision tools. However, unlike visual and auditory feedback, haptic reproduction is often difficult to achieve due to hardware limitations. This article describes a user study to examine how auditory feedback can be used to substitute haptic feedback when interacting with a vibrating tool. Participants remove some target material with a round-headed drill while avoiding damage to the underlying surface. In the experiment, varying combinations of surface force feedback, vibration feedback, and auditory feedback are used. We describe the design of the user study and present the results, which show that auditory feedback can compensate the lack of haptic feedback.

Effectiveness of Haptic Sensation for the Evaluation of Virtual Prototypes

Virtual reality techniques provide a unique new way to interact with three-dimensional digital objects. Virtual prototyping refers to the use of virtual reality to obtain evaluations of designs while they are still in digital form before physical prototypes are built. While the state-of-the-art in virtual reality relies mainly on the use of stereo viewing and auditory feedback, commercial hapti...

Human-Scale Virtual Environment for Product Design: Effect of Sensory Substitution

This paper presents a human-scale virtual environment (VE) with haptic feedback along with two experiments performed in the context of product design. The user interacts with a virtual mock-up using a large-scale bimanual string-based haptic interface called SPIDAR (Space Interface Device for Artificial Reality). An original self-calibration method is proposed. A vibro-tactile glove was develop...

Auditory Feedback in a Multimodal Balancing Task: Walking on a Virtual Plank

We describe a multimodal system which exploits the use of footwear-based interaction in virtual environments. We developed a pair of shoes enhanced with pressure sensors, actuators, and markers. Such shoes control a multichannel surround sound system and drive a physically based sound synthesis engine which simulates the act of walking on different surfaces. We present the system in all its com...

Comparison of visual and haptic feedback during training of lower extremities.

We compared the effects of visual and haptic modalities on the adaptation capabilities of healthy subjects to the virtual environment. The visual cueing (only the reference motion is presented) and visual feedback (the reference motion as well as the current tracking deviation are presented) were provided by a real-time visualization of a virtual teacher and a virtual self - avatar, using optic...

Six Degree-of Freedom Haptic Rendering for Dental Implantology Simulation

Training systems for dental implantology that are based on virtual reality need a precise haptic feedback with six Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) This is particularly challenging when using real patient data for the jawbone and during the interactive simulation of drilling. In this paper, we present our simulator and two complementary contributions: The first one is a method for 6DoF haptic renderin...
