Massed-trial Overtraining Effects on Extinction and Reversal Performance in Turtles (Geoclemys reevesii)

چکیده
Two experiments with turtles (Geoclemys reevesii) examined the overtrain ing extinction effect (OEE) and the overtraining reversal effect (ORE), under massed train ing conditions. In Experiment 1, three g roups of turtles received 7, 14, or 21 sessions of training in a runway situation for food reinforcement, followed by 15 se ssions of extinction. Extinction was faster, the greater the number of acquisition sessions. In Experiment 2, the two groups of turtles lear ned a spatial discrim ination for food reinforcement either to a criterion (19 of 20 correct re sponses), or to that criterion plus 100 add itional trials of overtraining. W hen the validity of the positions was reversed, lear ning was faster for the overtrained group than for the group trained to a criterion. This evidence of the OEE and the ORE is the ® r st yet reported for a reptile. The resu lts are discussed in the framework of comparative re search on rewardschedule effects.

Compensatory growth responses to food restriction in the Chinese three-keeled pond turtle, Chinemys reevesii
Juvenile Chinese three-keeled pond turtles (Chinemys reevesii) were subjected to one of four different feeding regimens: ad libitum (AL), restricted (R), ad libitum-restricted (AL-R), or restricted-ad libitum (R-AL) for 13 weeks, to assess the compensatory growth (CG) response to food restriction and subsequent re-alimentation. After switching to ad libitum feeding, the turtles in R-AL group at...
متن کاملEffects of overtraining on extinction in newts (Cynops pyrrhogaster).
The overtraining extinction effect (OEE), a phenomenon in which extended training facilitates extinction, has been found in mammals and reptiles. However, fish have never shown OEE. No study has yet investigated OEE in newts, a representative amphibian species. We tested whether newts, Cynops pyrrhogaster, show OEE in a straight-array task. All animals received five trials per day and were give...

متن کاملCharacteristics and Risk Assessment of International Trade in Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles in China
– Commercial exploitation of freshwater turtles and tortoises has increased significantly in China since the 1990s, which has expedited the listing of some turtle species in Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Appendix II. We assessed the risk to tortoises and freshwater turtles native to China by analyzing biological and socio-economic variab...
متن کاملBehavioral Characterization of Individual Olfactory Memory Retrieval in Drosophila Melanogaster
Memory performance depends not only on effective learning and storage of information, but also on its efficient retrieval. In Drosophila, aversive olfactory conditioning generates qualitatively different forms of memory depending on the number and spacing of conditioning trials. However, it is not known how these differences are reflected at the retrieval level, in the behavior of individual fl...
