The definitional model of language
نویسنده
چکیده
The briefest and most usual way of defining the field of linguistics is to call it the "science of language," where "language" is intended to mean a natural language. This is not a sufficient definition, since there are other sciences of language such as the psychology of language, the sociology of language, and similar disciplines. How does linguistics differ from these other fields? Linguistics can most readily be differentiated from other sciences of language by expanding its original definition to read: Linguistics is the science of language with language as its primary objective of cognition. Other sciences may also deal with language, but their interest in language is as a tool for studying the particular scientific field. In the psychology of language, for example, the major focus of interest is speech behavior as part of human behavior in

Applicability Issues with TBLT in EFL Contexts
This paper examines the theoretical rationales and practical aspects of task-based language teaching (TBLT) with particular reference to research findings in EFL/ESL contexts. The definitional scope of the term ‘task’, polarizations in terms of task vs. non-task, and its relation to different language teaching approaches have engendered conceptual and methodological ambiguities. Moreover, fact...
متن کاملOn GCLA, Gisela, and MedView Studies in Declarative Programming with Application to Clinical Medicine
Using declarative programming a programmer should be able to concentrate on what a program should do without worrying to much about how it is done. To be able to advance declarative programming methodologies, real-world examples are needed that push the limits of the proposed programming techniques. In this thesis we focus on some aspects of declarative programming, mostly from an applied angle...
متن کاملA Note on Declarative Programming Paradigms and the Future of Definitional Programming
We discuss some approaches to declarative programming including functional programming, various logic programming languages and extensions, and definitional programming. In particular we discuss the programmers need and possibilities to influence the control part of programs. We also discuss some problems of the definitional programming language GCLA and try to find directions for future resear...
متن کاملWord Definitional Skills in School age Persian Speaking Children: A Developmental Study on Form
Objectives: Word definitional skills (WDSs) were classified according to the quality of both semantic content and syntactic form. The aim of the present study was to investigate the syntactic development in WDSs in typically developing school- age children. Methods: In this cross-sectional and descriptive-analytical study, 150 of typically developing school-age children participated by...
متن کاملRules of Definitional Reflection
This paper discusses two rules of definitional reflection: The “logical” version of definitional reflection as used in the extended logic programming language GCLA and the “ω”-version of definitional reflection as proposed by Eriksson and Girard. The logical version is a Left-introduction rule completely analogous to the Left-introduction rules for logical operators in Gentzen-style sequent sys...
متن کاملReranking Answers for Definitional QA Using Language Modeling
Statistical ranking methods based on centroid vector (profile) extracted from external knowledge have become widely adopted in the top definitional QA systems in TREC 2003 and 2004. In these approaches, terms in the centroid vector are treated as a bag of words based on the independent assumption. To relax this assumption, this paper proposes a novel language model-based answer reranking method...
