"Rat-Killing" for Prevention of Plague *Extracts from a Report to Government.

I HAVE the honour to submit the following report:? I. General.?As regards "rat-killing" I understand that in the autumn the Magistrate ordered that those who brought rats' tails from the mofussil had to bring a certificate with the signature or mark of a householder and countersigned b}r a Jat-raij7at or one of the village puncha)'at, to the effect that the rats were caught in or near houses. This is not practical and will be detrimental to "rat-killing;" moreover, in view of the statement following,it is unnecessary. From extended observation and enquiry I can give the following advice :?That rats' tails of a black or distinct!}' blackish colour are house vats and should be accepted, while tails of a dull yellow colour (a slightly blackish tinge shining through) or which are hairy, should not be accepted. The tails of even field rats when kept some time, especially if kept in spirit, get blackish, but the joints remain yellowish ; any
