چکیده

Over the past ten years the atomic force microscope has developed more and more into a spectroscopic tool rather than a simple microscope. Still, for most non-expert users corning from fields other than physics, such as biomedical scientists, dealing with the advanced spectroscopic AFM techniques beyond imaging is not so simple. This tutorial answers some how-to-do-it questions concerning the most common operations in AFM force-spectroscopy, namely mapping adhesion or more general force distributions, and calculating Young's modulus.

Modeling of Air Relative Humidity Effect on Adhesion Force in Manipulation of Nano-Particles and its Application in AFM

In this paper, the effect of air relative humidity and capillary force on contact geometry of surfaces based on JKR model by Atomic force microscopy was investigated in order to manipulate nano-particles. With transition from macro to nano-scale, the effect of surface forces becomes more significant in comparison with inertial force. Because contact mechanics models are based on surface energy ...

Direct AFM force mapping of surface nanoscale organization and protein adsorption on an aluminum substrate.

We investigate the nanoscale organization of a superficially hydroxylated Al substrate and its effect on subsequent protein adsorption using atomic force microscopy (AFM). For this purpose we used a mode which allows a direct mapping of a variety of surface properties (adhesion, elasticity, dissipation, etc.) to be probed simultaneously with topographical images. The hydroxylation treatment lea...

Flexible Helicoids, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) Cantilevers in High Mode Vibration, and Concave Notch Hinges in Precision Measurements and Research

Flexible structures are the main components in many precision measuring and research systems. They provide miniaturization, repeatability, minimal damping, low measuring forces, and very high resolution. This article focuses on the modeling, development, and comparison of three typical flexible micronano-structures: flexible helicoids, atomic force microscopy (AFM) cantilevers, and concave notc...

Nanoscale mapping of dielectric properties based on surface adhesion force measurements

The detection of local dielectric properties is of great importance in a wide variety of scientific studies and applications. Here, we report a novel method for the characterization of local dielectric distributions based on surface adhesion mapping by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The two-dimensional (2D) materials graphene oxide (GO), and partially reduced graphene oxide (RGO), which have si...

Probing molecular recognition sites on biosurfaces using AFM.

Knowledge of the molecular forces that drive receptor-ligand interactions is a key to gain a detailed understanding of cell adhesion events and to develop novel applications in biomaterials science. Until recently, there was no tool available for analyzing and mapping these forces on complex biosurfaces like cell surfaces. During the past decade, however, single-molecule atomic force microscopy...
