Bidding among friends and enemies∗
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider an auction setting in which bidders, even if they fail to obtain the good, care about the price paid by the winner. We study the impact of these price externalities on the first-price auction and the second-price auction in a symmetric information framework. We establish a distinction between price externalities that do not depend on the identity of the winner and price externalities that depend on the identity of the winner. We prove that the outcome of the first-price auction is not affected by the first type of price externalities while the outcome of the second-price auction is. In contrast, the second type of price externalities affects the outcome of both auction formats. In any case, in comparison with the first-price auction, the second-price auction exacerbates the effects of price externalities whatever their types are. The two auction formats are generically not equivalent. JEL Classification: D44, D62, G32.

A Probe into the Concept of Friendship in the Qur’ān
The topic of human relationships—be they positive and sympathetic, or negative and hostile—receives a great amount of attention in the Qur’ān. Human beings need to be aware of both their friends and their enemies in order to learn how to engage with both groups, how to make additional friends and defend themselves from harm caused by enemies, and, if possible, turn these enemies into friends. T...
متن کاملCore Stability in Hedonic Games among Friends and Enemies: Impact of Neutrals
We investigate hedonic games under enemies aversion and friends appreciation, where every agent considers other agents as either a friend or an enemy. We extend these simple preferences by allowing each agent to also consider other agents to be neutral. Neutrals have no impact on her preference, as in a graphical hedonic game. Surprisingly, we discover that neutral agents do not simplify matter...
متن کاملRepresenting and Solving Hedonic Games with Ordinal Preferences and Thresholds
We propose a new representation setting for hedonic games, where each agent partitions the set of other agents into friends, enemies, and neutral agents, with friends and enemies being ranked. Under the assumption that preferences are monotonic (respectively, antimonotonic) with respect to the addition of friends (respectively, enemies), we propose a bipolar extension of the Bossong–Schweigert ...
