چکیده

Using a uniaxial localization model, it is shown that parallel elasticrcstf!1int increases ductility, while an increase in support flexibility or length ofspecimen reduces ductility. Statistical macroscopic nonhomogeneity of the specimen ismodeled by a system of uniaxial parallel elements of random properties following thenormal distribution. The stability analysis and Monte Carlo simulations explain that insuch a system an increase of length or support flexibility reduces not only ductility butalso the strength of the system. The effect on strength depends on the number ofclements (width of specimen), which represents a new non-classical statistical sizeeffect, and on the standard deviation of peak stress values within the parallel system.Existence of an inflection point and the prolonged tail on the descending branch isexplained by the nonhomogeneity of the specimen, and the shape of the descendingbranch, along with the location of the inflection point, is obtained as a function ofmachine stiffness, parallel elastic restraint, and specimen length and width. Flexural Behavior of Lightweight Concrete Beams Reinforced with GFRP Bars and Effects of the Added Micro and Macro Fiber

This study evaluated the effect of macro steel fiber (SF), micro glass fiber (GF) and micro polypropylene fiber (PF) in lightweight aggregate concrete, (LWAC) beams reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. Firstly, concrete mixtures with different volume fractions of GF, PF and SF were tested up to compressive strength, then determine the optimum fiber content GF, PF and SF a...

Modelling the Stability of Asphalt Concrete with Fuzzy Logic and Statistical Methods for Various Freezing and Thawing Cycles

The stability of asphalt concrete under the effects of freezing and thawing was studied experimentally, and the experimental test results were modelled using fuzzy logic and statistical methods. The stability was investigated experimentally using the Marshall and ultrasound methods. Asphalt core samples 10 cm in diameter were alternately frozen (–20°C for 16 hr) and thawed (16°C for 8 hr) for 5...

Push-over analysis of concrete gravity dams due to flood inflow

This study numerically predicts the failure scenario of a cracked concrete gravity dam through a push-over nonlinear analysis. The mixed-mode Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) was employed using the extended finite element method (XFEM). The dam base was considered to be fully fixed without any foundation effects. The hydrostatic pressure on the dam's upstream face was increased incremen...

Investigating the Effects of Nanoclay and Nylon Fibers on the Mechanical Properties of Asphalt Concrete

This paper describes the effects of reinforcement by randomly distributed nylon fibers and addition of nanoclay on some engineering properties of a typical asphalt concrete. The properties of asphalt concrete reinforced by different percentages of 25 mm nylon fibers have been compared with those of the mixtures containing different percentages of nanoclay and those in which both the fibers and ...

Cracks Analysis in Zavin Concrete Dam Using Fracture Mechanics Approach

Most of the existing concrete dams are subjected to cracking. These cracks are caused by various factors such as construction practices, curing, loads and volume change of mass concrete which reduce the efficiency, failure or instability of concrete dams. Using fracture mechanics as a new method to estimate stability and durability of concrete dams is recommended in scientific publications in w...
