Modified crutch for the upper extremity amputee with lower extremity involvement.

چکیده
The Prosthetics/Orthotics and Physical Therapy Departments were faced with the challenge of creating a modified crutch for an upper extremity amputee with lower extremity involvement. A 46-year-old man, with congenital absence of both fibulae and his left arm from above the elbow, underwent a left total hip replacement in March 1979. He then had a left supracondylar osteotomy for valgus deformity in July of the same year. The patient's left lower extremity was supported in a splint, and he was to ambulate nonweight bearing on the left. He had an upper extremity prosthesis but chose not to wear it because of extreme discomfort. After surgery, the patient's goals were to become independent in transfers and in ambulation both on level surfaces and stairs. Therefore, we needed to design a device whereby the patient could achieve these goals. To allow this patient to use crutches, and for ease of fabrication, we made an open-socket mold from the patient's stump out of Orthoplast* in accordance with general prosthetic principles. We bonded the open socket to a strip of Orthoplast by heating the two pieces together with a heat gun and trimmed the strip to the shape desired. We then brushed carbon tetrachloride over the Orthoplast to enhance its adherent qualities and wrapped the socket and the strip around the vertical sides of the crutch (Fig. 1). The patient wore a stockinette over his

Upper extremity kinetics during Lofstrand crutch-assisted gait.
A three-dimensional (3D) biomechanical model was developed to determine upper extremity kinematics and kinetics of persons walking with forearm crutches. Six-component load cells and strain gauges were installed in the crutches to determine crutch forces. A six-camera VICON motion system was used to acquire coordinate data from 24 reflective markers attached to the upper extremities and crutche...

UPPER EXTREMITY KINETICS DURING LOFSTRAND CRUTCH-ASSISTED GAIT IN CHILDREN Neha Bhagchandani, B.E. Marquette University, 2010 Complete biomechanical analysis helps evaluate the motion during various gait patterns for the upper and lower extremities. Extensive studies have been performed to evaluate unassisted gait patterns, but very little has been accomplished for studying assisted motion. Chi...

Background: Little is known about the influence of habitual participation in physical exercise and diet on upper-extremity physical function in older adults. To assess the relationship of general physical exercise and diet to upper-extremity physical function and pain intensity in older adults. Methods: A cohort of 111 patients 50 or older completed a sociodemographic survey, the Rapid Asse...

Objective: The primary objective of this case study was to investigate the effect of modified constraint-induced movement therapy on upper extremity function in a patient with severe acquired brain injury after 4 years. Material & method: A 33 years old women (F.Z), who had a severe acquired brain injury (ABI) 4 years ago participated in the present study. The right hand was the dominan...
متن کاملCharacterisation and outcomes of upper extremity amputations.
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study is to characterise the injuries, outcomes, and disabling conditions of the isolated, combat-related upper extremity amputees in comparison to the isolated lower extremity amputees and the general amputee population. METHODS A retrospective study of all major extremity amputations sustained by the US military service members from 1 October 2001 to 30 July 2...
