چکیده

In this paper, we propose two metrics capable of modeling forms of polarity contrast: polarity divergence and polarity dimorphism. To explore their potential usefulness to the detection of verbal irony and sentiment polarity, we performed an exploratory text analysis on a corpus of figurative tweets annotated by sentiment. The results of a text analysis show that, employing two different types of valenced lexicon, we can improve performance in polarity classification.

Studying Irony Detection Beyond Ironic Criticism: Let's Include Ironic Praise

Studies of irony detection have commonly used ironic criticisms (i.e., mock positive evaluation of negative circumstances) as stimulus materials. Another basic type of verbal irony, ironic praise (i.e., mock negative evaluation of positive circumstances) is largely absent from studies on individuals' aptitude to detect verbal irony. However, it can be argued that ironic praise needs to be consi...

NIHRIO at SemEval-2018 Task 3: A Simple and Accurate Neural Network Model for Irony Detection in Twitter

This paper describes our NIHRIO system for SemEval-2018 Task 3 “Irony detection in English tweets.” We propose to use a simple neural network architecture of Multilayer Perceptron with various types of input features including: lexical, syntactic, semantic and polarity features. Our system achieves very high performance in both subtasks of binary and multi-class irony detection in tweets. In pa...

Gestural codas pave the way to the understanding of verbal irony

It is well known that speakers rely on prosodic and gestural features at the time of producing and understanding verbal irony. Yet little research has examined (a) how gestures manifest themselves in spontaneous speech, both during and after ironic utterances; and (b) how the presence of the so-called ‘gestural codas’ (audiovisual cues produced after the ironic utterance) influences irony detec...

Sparse, Contextually Informed Models for Irony Detection: Exploiting User Communities, Entities and Sentiment

Automatically detecting verbal irony (roughly, sarcasm) in online content is important for many practical applications (e.g., sentiment detection), but it is difficult. Previous approaches have relied predominantly on signal gleaned from word counts and grammatical cues. But such approaches fail to exploit the context in which comments are embedded. We thus propose a novel strategy for verbal i...

Detecting Sarcasm Using Different Forms Of Incongruity

Sarcasm is a form of verbal irony that is intended to express contempt or ridicule. Often quoted as a challenge to sentiment analysis, sarcasm involves use of words of positive or no polarity to convey negative sentiment. Incongruity has been observed to be at the heart of sarcasm understanding in humans. Our work in sarcasm detection identifies different forms of incongruity and employs differ...
