چکیده

One characteristic of many subduction zone garnet peridotites is that they contain titanium-bearing phases not otherwise Ž . found in mantle rocks. In particular, titanoclinohumite TiCH andror its breakdown assemblage consisting of symplectic intergrowths of olivine and ilmenite is common in many of these bodies. The Alpe Arami garnet lherzolite of the Lepontine Alps, while lacking TiCH, displays instead large numbers of FeTiO rod-shaped precipitates in the oldest generation of 3 olivine, amounting to approximately 1% by volume, indicating that at some time in its past, the peridotite experienced conditions under which the solubility of TiO in olivine was greater than 0.6 wt.%. In order to test the hypothesis that the 2 environment of very high solubility of TiO in olivine is to be found at very high pressures, we have conducted experiments 2 on lherzolite compositions with added ilmenite at pressures between 5 and 12 GPa and temperatures of 1350–1700 K. Our results on anhydrous compositions show that, whereas solubility of TiO was not detected in olivine at 5 GPa, 1400 K where 2 it coexists with rutile, when rutile disappeared from the paragenesis, the solubility climbed to 0.5 wt.% at 8 and 10 GPa, and to 1 wt.% at 12 GPa, all at 1600 K. These results support our previous interpretations from titanate morphology and Ž . abundance that the Alpe Arami massif has surfaced from depths )300 km corresponding to pressures )10 GPa but remove the need to suggest a deeper origin and possible precursor phase such as wadsleyite. They also support the hypothesis that garnet peridotites with unusual Ti-bearing phases reflect a unique mantle environment occurring in the mantle wedge overlying subduction zones. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Electrical conductivity of orthopyroxene: Implications for the water content of the asthenosphere

Electrical conductivity of minerals is sensitive to water content and hence can be used to infer the water content in the mantle. However, previous studies to infer the water content in the upper mantle were based on pure olivine model of the upper mantle. Influence of other minerals particularly that of orthopyroxene needs to be included to obtain a better estimate of water content in view of ...

Petrogenesis of mantle peridotites from the South of Jazmourian, Makran accretionary prism, Iran

Mantle peridotites exposed in south Jazmourian comprise of lherzolite and porphyroclastic Cpx-bearing harzburgite in the lower part with chromitite lenses in the upper parts. Petrography and microprobe studies shows evidence of melt-peridotite interactions; post melting processes and subsolidus interactions, which has been associated with appearance of two generations of deformed primary pyroxe...

Petrochemical Characteristics of Neogene and Quaternary Alkali Olivine Basalts from the Western Margin of the Lut Block, Eastern Iran

The Nayband strike-slip fault forms the western margin of the micro-continental Lut block in Eastern Iran. Neogene and Quaternary mafic volcanic rocks collected near Tabas, along the northern part of the fault (NNF; 15 Ma), and further to the south, along the middle part of the fault (MNF; 2 Ma), are within-plate sodic-series alkali olivine basalts with high TiO2 and up to >16% normative nephel...

Olivine Hydration in the Deep Upper Mantle: Effects of Temperature and Silica Activity

Although water controls the biology and geology of the surface, hydrogen is perhaps the most poorly constrained compositional variable in the bulk Earth. Its concentration in the upper mantle appears to be controlled by its solubility as hydroxyl in the nominally anhydrous silicate phases, olivine, pyroxene, garnet, wadsleyite, and ringwoodite. Here we describe a series of experiments showing t...

Seismic Discontinuity

The 41 0-kilometer seismic discontinuity is generally considered to be caused by a phase transformation of the main constituent of the upper mantle, olivine, ot-(Mg,Fe)2SiO4, to P-(Mg,Fe)2SiO4. Recent data show that H20 dissolves in olivine and other nominally anhydrous mantle minerals and that the partitioning of H20 between olivine and P-(Mg,Fe)2Si04 is about 1:10. Such behavior strongly affe...
