چکیده

We examine the SI effects and Bachman’s SI Parameterization in a two-fronts LES simulation. The domain, governed by periodic horizontal temperature profile, consists of a Geostrophic Stable front and a Geostrophic Unstable front. In the study, we find that the Bachman’s SI Parameterization is not good enough to reproduce the Reynolds stress and the SI turbulent buoyancy transport in the LES simulation. The Geostrophic Shear Production by the SI eddy effects are not a linear vertical profile but a two stage equation. On the first stage from the surface to a depth about −15m, the GSP increases linearly. On the second stage from the depth about −15m to the mixing layer bottom, the GSP decreases linearly. We also find that the Reynolds stress in this simulation consists of not only SI turbulence beyond the horizontal resolution of 10m, but also averaged LES subgrid friction. The LES subgrid friction is as important as SI turbulent momentum transport in the SI active grids.

Instabilities of a Baroclinic, Double Diffusive Frontal Zone

The linear theory of double diffusive interleaving is extended to take account of baroclinic effects. This study goes beyond previous studies by including the possibility of modes with nonzero tilt in the alongfront direction, which allows for advection by the baroclinic frontal flow. This requires that the stability equations be solved numerically. The main example is based on observations of ...

Preserving monotonicity in anisotropic diffusion

We show that standard algorithms for anisotropic diffusion based on centered differencing (including the recent symmetric algorithm) do not preserve monotonicity. In the context of anisotropic thermal conduction, this can lead to the violation of the entropy constraints of the second law of thermodynamics, causing heat to flow from regions of lower temperature to higher temperature. In regions ...

Using a Temperature Gradient against the Time in Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis May Eliminate the Need for Stacking Gels

Background and Objectives: Making stacking gels for polyacrylamide gels in the laboratory by conventional methods is laborious and time consuming. Considering the role of temperature in polyacrylamide gels with respect to electrical resistance and viscosity, we assumed that decreasing the temperature would cause an increase in electrical resistance and viscosity.  Ultimately, a downward tempera...

On the Dynamic Characteristic of Thermoelastic Waves in Thermoelastic Plates with Thermal Relaxation Times

In this paper, analysis for the propagation of general anisotropic media of finite thickness with two thermal relaxation times is studied. Expression of displacements, temperature, thermal stresses, and thermal gradient for most general anisotropic thermoelastic plates of finite thickness are obtained in the analysis. The calculation is then carried forward for slightly more specialized case of...

Microtearing instabilities and electron transport in the NSTX spherical tokamak.

We report a successful quantitative account of the experimentally determined electron thermal conductivity chi(e) in a beam-heated H mode plasma by the magnetic fluctuations from microtearing instabilities. The calculated chi(e) based on existing nonlinear theory agrees with the result from transport analysis of the experimental data. Without using any adjustable parameter, the good agreement s...
