The Role of Deleterious and Beneficial Mutations in the Evolution of Ploidy Levels

چکیده
All sexual organisms experience a haploid and a diploid phase during their life cycle, yet the extent of each phase is remarkably variable. We explore the evolution of a locus that alters the timing of meiosis, hence altering the proportion of the life cycle spent in either the haploid or diploid phase. Evolution ofthe life cycle will occur in response to viability selection acting at fitness loci even when selection does not directly act on the locus modifying the life cycle. Both selection against deleterious mutations and for beneficial mutations are considered. It is found that even when diploids mask deleterious alleles and reveal beneficial ones, the diploid phase of the life cycle will not necessarily increase. Conditions under which each phase is expected to increase are developed. These theoretical results may, in part, explain observed life cycle variation.

Ploidy and the causes of genomic evolution.
Genomes vary dramatically in size and in content. This variation is driven in part by numerous polyploidization events that have happened over the course of eukaryotic evolution. Experimental evolution studies, primarily using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, provide insights into the immediate fitness effects of ploidy mutations, the ability of organisms of different ploidy levels to mask d...

Background: We examine the GA-repeat core promoters of MECOM and GABRA3 in human embryonic kidney-293 cell line and show that those GA-repeats have promoter activity, and those different alleles of the repeats can significantly alter gene expression. We propose a novel role for GA-repeat core promoters to regulate gene expression in the genes involved in development and evolution. متن کاملComputational approach towards identification of pathogenic missense mutations in AMELX gene and their possible association with amelogenesis imperfecta
Amelogenin gene (AMEL-X) encodes an enamel protein called amelogenin, which plays a vital role in tooth development. Any mutations in this gene or the associated pathway lead to developmental abnormalities of the tooth. The present study aims to analyze functional missense mutations in AMEL-X genes and derive an association with amelogenesis imperfecta. The information on miss...
متن کاملMasking and purging mutations following EMS treatment in haploid, diploid and tetraploid yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae).
The yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, was used as a model to investigate theories of ploidy evolution. Mutagenesis experiments using the alkylating agent EMS (ethane methyl sulphonate) were conducted to assess the relative importance that masking of deleterious mutations has on response to and recovery from DNA damage. In particular, we tested whether cells with higher ploidy levels have relativ...
متن کاملExperiments on the role of deleterious mutations as stepping stones in adaptive evolution.
Many evolutionary studies assume that deleterious mutations necessarily impede adaptive evolution. However, a later mutation that is conditionally beneficial may interact with a deleterious predecessor before it is eliminated, thereby providing access to adaptations that might otherwise be inaccessible. It is unknown whether such sign-epistatic recoveries are inconsequential events or an import...
