Limiting Emissions from Stationary Sources

چکیده

The first priority in designing a strategy to control nitrogen oxides is to protect human health. Human health impacts appear to be related to peak exposures to nitrogen oxides (NOx). In addition to potentially damaging human health, nitrogen oxides are precursors to ozone (O3) formation, which can harm human health and vegetation. Finally, nitrogen oxides contribute to acid deposition, which damages vegetation and aquatic ecosystems. The extent to which NOx emissions harm human health depends on ground-level concentrations and the number of people exposed. Source location can affect these parameters. Gases emitted in areas with meteorological, climatological, and topographical features that favor dispersion will be less likely to concentrate near the ground. However, some meteorological conditions, such as inversion, may result in significantly higher ambient levels. Sources away from population centers will expose fewer people to harmful pollution. Plant siting is a critical feature in any air pollution management strategy. However, due to the dispersion of nitrogen oxides that may contribute to ozone formation and acid deposition far from the source, relying on plant siting alone is not a recommended strategy. The long-term objective must be to reduce total emissions. Effective control of NOx emissions will require controls on both stationary sources and mobile transport sources. Each requires different strategies. This guideline focuses on control strategies for stationary sources (primarily fossil-fuel-fired electricity-generating plants).

Evaluating measurements of carbon dioxide emissions using a precision source--A natural gas burner.

UNLABELLED A natural gas burner has been used as a precise and accurate source for generating large quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2) to evaluate emissions measurements at near-industrial scale. Two methods for determining carbon dioxide emissions from stationary sources are considered here: predicting emissions based on fuel consumption measurements-predicted emissions measurements, and direc...

Nitrogen isotopes as indicators of NO(x) source contributions to atmospheric nitrate deposition across the midwestern and northeastern United States.

Global inputs of NO(x) are dominated by fossil fuel combustion from both stationary and vehicular sources and far exceed natural NO(x) sources. However, elucidating NO(x) sources to any given location remains a difficult challenge, despite the need for this information to develop sound regulatory and mitigation strategies. We present results from a regional-scale study of nitrogen isotopes (del...

Emission evaluation of CO2 and CH4 gases in the selected gas pressure booster station in the Bangestan field of the National Iranian Oil Company

Background: Iran is located in the seventh rank in terms of CO2 emissions resulting from the fuel combustion in the world. Gas compressor booster stations, due to the several sources of contaminants, are causing the release of large amounts of CO2 and CH4, which will cause climate change therefore, estimating the emissions of the gases from oil and gas, different processing units are necessary....

Determination of Visible Emission Opacity from Stationary Sources Using Computer-Based Photographic Analysis Systems

(a) Many stationary sources discharge visible emissions into the atmosphere, which are usually in the shape of a plume. The following method describes a technical approach for determining the visible opacity of plume emissions through the use of photographs taken of the regulated source under compliance enforcement conditions. The photographs are processed using computer software that determine...
