Seller cheap talk in common value auctions ∗

چکیده
Sellers benefit on average from revealing information about their goods to buyers, but the incentive to exaggerate undermines the credibility of seller statements. When multiple goods are being auctioned, we show that revealing a complete or partial ordering of the different goods by value can be credible. Ordinal cheap talk of this form is not susceptible to exaggeration because it simultaneously reveals favorable information about some goods and unfavorable information about other goods. Any informative ordering increases revenues in accordance with the linkage principle, and the complete ordering is asymptotically revenueequivalent to full revelation as the number of goods becomes large. These results provide a new explanation in addition to bundling, complementarities, and versioning for how a seller benefits from the sale of multiple goods. JEL Classification: D44, D82, L15.

Rationalizable Strategies and Perfect Equilibria in Common Value Auctions with Variable Supply
Auctions with variable supply are multi-unit auctions, in which the seller determines the supply quantity as a function of the bidding. These auctions are used on various markets ranging from Treasury bills and IPOs to rare wine and art. In this work we compare in a common value model the mixed strategy subgame perfect equilibria and the rationalizable strategies of the uniform price and the di...

Sellers often make explicit or implicit product claims without providing evidence. Even when such “puffery” is pure cheap talk, we find it can be credible and help buyers make a better decision. Talking up one attribute of a product leads rational buyers to have a better impression of the product on that attribute, but also to have a worse impression of the product on other attributes. Such upd...
متن کاملAuction Selection by an Informed Seller
We analyze selection of an auction format by an informed seller. We model a game with two stages: first, an informed seller announces a good for sale and chooses an auction format from a set of standard auctions; second, privately informed bidders compete for the object. The game has an important signaling element as the auction choice may signal the seller’s type. We study both private and com...
متن کاملRevenue and efficiency in multi-unit uniform-price auctions
Recently both the range and the value of objects sold by auction have grown tremendously. An auction is an exchange mechanism with asymmetric information. Auctions are so popular because when the seller is unsure about the value that bidders assign to the sold objects, one possible way to reveal the bidder who is willing to pay the highest price for the object is to apply an appropriate auction...
متن کاملAuction Design with Advised Bidders
This paper studies efficient and optimal auction design where bidders do not know their values and solicit advice from informed but biased advisors via a cheap-talk game. When advisors are biased toward overbidding, we characterize efficient equilibria of static auctions and equilibria of the English auction under the NITS condition (Chen, Kartik and Sobel (2008)). In static auctions, advisors ...
