Featural and configural face processing differentially modulate ERP components.

چکیده
Since all faces share the same first-order configuration, individual faces are recognized by subtle differences in their individual features and second-order configuration. This study asked two questions about the ERP signatures of featural and configural face processing. First, which ERP components are sensitive to subtle modifications of features and second-order configuration? Secondly, does explicitly instructing participants to attend to either the features or the configuration of face stimuli influence the neural processes elicited by these stimuli? In the first part of this experiment, pairs of faces with differences in their features, in their second-order configuration or no difference were presented, with participants making same/different judgments. In the second part, participants were asked to focus on either the features or configuration in pairs of faces and to judge if there was any difference in that aspect while ignoring other differences. The P1 and N170 ERP components were not influenced by feature or second-order configuration differences in faces, indicating that these components could be more sensitive to manipulations that disrupt the first-order configuration of a face. In contrast, the P2 was larger in amplitude for faces with a configuration modification than for faces with a feature modification or for the original face. One explanation of these results is that processing the configuration of a face elicits more visual cortical feedback than processing the features. Finally, modulation of the P300 confirmed that the tasks presented in Part 2 were successful in varying the attention focus on the features or configuration.

Featural and configural face processing in adults and infants: a behavioral and electrophysiological investigation.
We sought to elucidate the behavioral and electrophysiological correlates of face processing, in adults and infants, by manipulating either the featural or configural information within the face. Two different experiments are reported. In these experiments, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from the scalp while adult, 8-month-old, and 4-month-old participants completed configural-ch...
متن کاملConfigural and featural face processing are modulated by spatial attention: evidence from event-related brain potentials
Face recognition is widely believed to rely on two distinct mechanisms, the configural (e.g., the distance between two eyes or between mouth and nose) and featural (e.g., the shape of the eyes or mouth) face processing. However, little is known about whether the two processing types are affected by spatial attention. In our study, spatial attention was manipulated by asking participants to atte...
متن کاملFeatures are also important: contributions of featural and configural processing to face recognition.
It has been suggested that face recognition is primarily based on configural information, with featural information playing little or no role. We investigated this idea by comparing the prototype effect for face prototypes that emphasized either featural or configural processing. In Experiment 1, participants showed a tendency to commit false alarms in response to nonstudied prototypes, and thi...
متن کاملProcessing of featural and configural aspects of faces is lateralized in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex: A TMS study
Facial recognition relies on distinct and parallel types of processing: featural processing focuses on the individual components of a face (e.g., the shape or the size of the eyes), whereas configural (or "relational") processing considers the spatial interrelationships among the single facial components (e.g., distance of the mouth from the nose). Previous neuroimaging evidence has suggested t...
متن کاملErratum: An other-race effect for configural and featural processing of faces: upper and lower face regions play different roles
We examined whether Asian individuals would show differential sensitivity to configural vs. featural changes to own- and other-race faces and whether such sensitivity would depend on whether the changes occurred in the upper vs. lower regions of the faces. We systematically varied the size of key facial features (eyes and mouth) of own-race Asian faces and other-race Caucasian faces, and the co...
