Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen,?The subject to whicli for a brief space of time I am about to invite the attention of this section of the Congress is one that of late years has much occupied the attention of military medical officers in India. It is the prevalence of enteric fever among young soldiers during the early years of their service; the nature of this fever ; its causes ; and the most rational means of prevention. It is not in India only that this subject has awakened attention, as I shall presently show ; the French army serving in Algeria has in like manner suffered, and very notably also during the occupation of Eome. It was Dr. Bryden who first seriously awakened the attention of the profession in India to the wide-spread distribution of enteric fever in that country, and brought out the fact
