Numerical simulations of three-dimensional foam by the immersed boundary method

چکیده
In this paper, we present an immersed boundary (IB) method to simulate a dry foam, i.e., a foam in which most of the volume is attributed to its gas phase. Dry foam dynamics involves the interaction between a gas and a collection of thin liquidfilm internal boundaries that partition the gas into discrete cells or bubbles. The liquid film boundaries are flexible, contract under the influence of surface tension, and are permeable to the gas, which moves across them by diffusion at a rate proportional to the local pressure difference across the boundary. Such problems are conventionally studied by assuming that the pressure is uniform within each bubble. Here, we introduce instead an IB method that takes into account the non-equilibrium fluid mechanics of the gas. To model gas diffusion across the internal liquid-film boundaries, we allow normal slip between the boundary and the gas at a velocity proportional to the (normal) force generated by the boundary surface tension. We implement this method in the threedimensional case, and test it by verifying the 3D generalization of von-Neumann relation, which governs the coarsening of a three-dimensional dry foam. ∗Department of Mathematics, Chung-Ang University, Dongjakgu Heukseokdong, Seoul 156-756, Korea, [email protected]; 82.2.820.5219 (voice); 82.2.820.5214 (fax) †Department of Applied Mathematics, Institute of Mathematical Modeling and Scientific Computing, National Chiao Tung University, 1001, Ta Hsueh Road, Hsinchu 300, Taiwan, [email protected] ‡Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, 251 Mercer Street, New York, NY 10012 USA. متن کاملAn Immersed Boundary Method for a Contractile Elastic Ring in a Three-Dimensional Newtonian Fluid
In this paper, we present an immersed boundarymethod for modeling a contractile elastic ring in a three-dimensional Newtonian fluid. The governing equations are themodified Navier–Stokes equations with an elastic force from the contractile ring. The length of the elastic ring is time dependent and the ring shrinks with time because of its elastic nature in our proposed model. We dynamically red...
متن کاملThe immersed boundary method for two-dimensional foam with topological changes
We extend the immersed boundary (IB) method to simulate the dynamics of a 2D dry foam by including the topological changes of the bubble network. In the article [Y. Kim, M.-C. Lai, and C. S. Peskin, J. Comput. Phys. 229:5194-5207, 2010], we implemented an IB method for the foam problem in the two-dimensional case, and tested it by verifying the von Neumann relation which governs the coarsening ...
متن کاملParticle methods for direct numerical simulations of three - dimensional wakes †
In this paper we describe recent advances in the development of particle methods for the direct numerical simulations of three-dimensional wakes. Both body-fitted and immersed boundary techniques are considered. The accuracy and numerical cost of the proposed numerical methods are discussed on the benchmark cases of a flow past a cylinder and of a vortex ring impinging on a cylinder. PACS numbe...
متن کاملA Sharp Interface Method for Two-Phase Flows Interacting with Moving Bodies
In this paper, we present a combined immersed-boundary/ghost-fluid sharp interface method for the simulations of three-dimensional two-phase flows interacting with moving bodies on fixed Cartesian grids. This work is based on a sharp interface immersed boundary method for fluid flows interacting with moving bodies and a level set based ghost fluid method (GFM) for two-phase interface treatment....
