Investigation of Material Issues in μMold Shape Deposition Manufacturing of Ceramic and Metallic Parts

Gelcast ceramic materials have great potential in the application in millimeter and micrometer objects, such as micro gas turbine engines. To build a complex-shaped ceramic part which is unavailable for conventional fabrication techniques, µMold Shape Deposition Manufacturing (µMold SDM) is developed and designed. Material issues, such as compatibility, shrinkage, thermal property and surface quality are crucial for the required complexity and feature size. Various materials and treatments have been investigated and optimized to improve the quality of ceramics parts fabricated by µMold SDM. In this report, the processes of µSDM and µMold SDM have been investigated. Parts of a micro gas turbine (air bearing, impeller) were made for evaluation, by ceramic gelcasting and metal electroplating. The motivation of this study and current research results, as well as future work and possible applications, are discussed.-iv
