چکیده
The single-user separation theorem source-channel coding has been D r o v e d D W V ~ O U S ~ V Verdd. Fellow, IEEE, and Yossef Steinberg of joint for wide classes of sources and channels. We find ab informition-stable sourcdchannel pair which does not satisfy the separation theorem. New necessary and sufficient conditions for the transmissibility of a source through a channel are found, and we characterize the class of channels for which the separation theorem holds regardless of the source statistics.

To code, or not to code: lossy source-channel communication revisited
What makes a source–channel communication system optimal? It is shown that in order to achieve an optimal cost–distortion tradeoff, the source and the channel have to be matched in a probabilistic sense. The match (or lack of it) involves the source distribution, the distortion measure, the channel conditional distribution, and the channel input cost function. Closed-form necessary and sufficie...
متن کاملJoint Source-Channel Codes for MIMO Block Fading Channels
We consider transmission of a continuous amplitude i.i.d source over an L-block Rayleigh fading Mt × Mr MIMO channel when the transmitter has no channel state information. Due to strict delay requirements Shannon’s source-channel separation theorem becomes obsolete and the optimal performance requires a joint optimization of the source and channel variables. Our goal is to minimize the expected...
متن کاملJoint source-channel coding for transmitting correlated sources over broadcast networks
We consider a set of S independent encoders that must transmit a set of correlated sources through a network of noisy, independent, broadcast channels to T receivers, with no interference at the receivers. For the general problem of sending correlated sources through broadcast networks, it is known that the source–channel separation theorem breaks down and the achievable rate region as well as ...
متن کاملSource-Channel Coding and Separation for Generalized Communication Systems
We consider transmission of stationary and ergodic sources over non-ergodic composite channels with channel state information at the receiver (CSIR). Previously we introduced alternate capacity definitions to Shannon capacity, including the capacity versus outage and the expected capacity. These generalized definitions relax the constraint of Shannon capacity that all transmitted information mu...

The principles which have been prevailing so far for designing communication systems rely on Shannon’s source and channel coding separation theorem [1]. This theorem states that source and channel optimum performance bounds can be approached as close as desired by designing independently the source and channel coding strategies. However, this theorem holds only under asymptotic conditions, wher...
